24-hour district in danger
was over on CJ and apparently this article came out on the Herald today.. theres been speculation for a while now but it seems like the ball may finally be rolling...
I know that some of you don't get the Miami Herald, so here's a pointer to the article from this morning:
24-hour club district may face closing time
Miami's 24-hour-club district might soon be closing earlier because city commissioners worry about complaints from nearby condo owners.
Miami clubgoers used to staying out past dawn may soon have to continue their festivities elsewhere.
Downtown Miami's 24-hour club district is poised to turn out the lights earlier. What time is unclear, but the most radical of suggested scenarios would have the district adopt the more common 5 a.m. closing enforced elsewhere.
Miami city commissioners on Monday took the first step in reducing the size and hours of operation for the city's Park West Entertainment District.
Commissioners asked city staff to come up with a proposal for a scaled-back club district, but it may take months for a final decision. The district, located west of Biscayne Boulevard, east of Overtown and south of the Interstate 395 overpass, boasts seven nightclubs and attracts large weekend crowds.
It was well predicted... I bet Saleen its all claiming credit for it.
lol yep he already did, if this in fact does happen.. kiss WMC goodbye
I mean just imagine. If the nearby condo owners ( Im still trying to figure out which ones.. and the ones that IM thinking about are well out from the noise).. just imagine when those luxury condo's been currently built will complain if by any chance the 24 hr license stays or survives.. its time to do something in the lines of .. " THE MIX" days.
This is bad. Real bad for the scene.

Okay, first of all 5 AM is still a great time compared to almost every other city in the country. A lot of the Miami TAs have partied in Tampa and Orlando where the common closing time is 3 AM. It's the same way in much of Atlanta, and closing hours are ever earlier in other cities (2 in Boston, and 1 in most of Phoenix). It's not all that different in many parts of L.A. either.
Just like the scene didn't die in SoBe, it won't die downtown either. There's also a possibility that a new 24 hour district will emerge.
Having said all that, there's also the possibility that downtown will continue to have a 24 hour zoned district for many years to come.

ever come to think that a club like space makes a very large chunk of its revenue from afterhours 5am and on. terrace sets from roger sanchez, sander k and the like bring in the crowds at space like nobody else. you stop serving booze at 5 am, the crowd goes home, simple as that. and yeah other places do have earlier closing times, thats what made miami unique. how many ppl do u know that ask when they come to town, "how can i get to space?". why go to tampa to see tiesto or orlando to see PVD til 2am when u can see him in space and then stay around for a kick ass after hours set from edgar, or markus, or whoever till the crack of dawn. maybe it wont kill the scene all together but itll make it a hell of alot more boring. someone on CJ posted the example of Simons in G-ville. world class acts every other weekend, closing time hit 2am and all went to shit.
first ibiza, now miami?!?!??!
anyone else think this has a lot to do with those fucked up clubs like metropolis and all those fuuckers shooting each other cuz some nigga looked at his girl the wrong way?
i highly doubt "noise" is the reason they are trying to do this...
edit: oh and yeah, that ass in a navigator running over a parking attendent or a homeless guy (whoever the fuck it was) going down the wrong way of a oneway street and speeding off.

noooooooooooooooooo
Thats all I have to say.
Sander K in the main room
You guys hit the nail on the head. The more bad seeds you have, the more likely you'll see these changes implemented. If club owners turn out to be shady (Metropolis), and club patrons are seen as unethical (running over others) then this action will lead to a reaction.
If you think about it, that's a big part of the reason why Tampa and Orlando don't have much of a late night scene. There are those on this board who will tell you about the days when Firestone in Orlando would stay open as late as Space, or Simons in Gainesville, or some of the clubs off Franklin in Tampa. What happened? Shady promoters, 8-up underaged ravers, and so on. The bigger the scene got the more bad incidents and bad publicity it received.
BUT...comparing Gainesville to Miami is like comparing apples to oranges. Miami has that sin city mentality, or a party city mentality. As such, people expect the city to have a thriving nightlife. Gainesville? Most of the voting public over there isn't made up of the 18-26 year old students who go to UF, but rather of many conservatives. If you think about Tampa, the median age of the city is 40, and a lot of those folks are too family-oriented or retired. They have a huge impact when it comes to new laws being passed.
While Miami on paper seems like a small city (Miami has 400,000 people, and 100,000 living on the beach), metropolitan Miami is the most populated part of FL. Hell, South Florida as a whole (Palm Beach to Dade County) is the 6th most populated area in the country, with about 5.5 million people.
So while on paper Jacksonville seems like the biggest city (800,000 people) in FL, that's only b/c it's a consolidated city county. If such was the case in Miami and Dade County, then Miami would be seen as a city of 2.5 million people.
And what does a biggper population mean? Oftentimes the biggest metro areas are also the most liberal in this country. Such is the case with NYC, the real Bay area (no, not Tampa Bay - San Francisco!) and Chicago. Even Dallas, which is based in the South, and even moreso Texas (half of all state executions in this country happen in Tx), is relatively more open to it.
Miami has the following advantages that'll help ensure it stays active on the nightlife map
1) large base of locals between the ages of 18-34 who enjoy clubbing(in most cities it's by and large an 18-22 year old crowd)
2) HUGE gay community.
3) HUGE tourist industry. Unlike the huge number of family tourists in Orlando, Miami's tourists are much more about sun, sand, and hedonism.
actually i think i read recently that metro Miami has 2.4 million ppl, Tampa also has 2.4 million in its metro area..a manager of mine at work lived in Tampa for a while and the equivalent of the 24 hour district over there is Ybor city...its not really 24 hours, just where the bigger clubs are at (Amphitheatre) and according to him.. it TOTALLY SUCKED ASS.. Miami is unique, hip hop venues wont be affected, ive never heard of hip hoppers staying out till the wee morning hours.

People. Come to realize that the afterhours in Miami is what has brought Miami into the clubbing spotlight. The whole idea of going out and partying till past dawn. Thats what made it so special to many people and DJ's.Yeah, they can stay open till 5, but look whats going on at the beach, the reason why there arent many complaints is because they all head to Space afterwars.
With all those luxurious high rises this was bound to happen. We saw the first example down in South pointe in Sobe with Opium and Nikki beach been restricted ( and the whole area stopping any further club openings for that matter ). Now with all those high rises been built, it was obviouse that something like that would have come to light. And now comparing cities doesnt work, everyone goes to Miami and thats where the action is. Imagine WMC now.. that will suck.

I dont even want to think about that happening. I assume its just a proposal. That takes time. I highly doubt they will do it. Afterhours are a huge thing on Fridays & Sat. Crosses fingers!!
EDIT**
WMC is literaly afterhours. The really good shows...Deep Dish, Sander k, Sasha & Digweed, Erick M, and Roger + many more. After a good trance show you need a good show in the terrace as well!!!
