Producing trance

I've always deluded myself into thinking that I myself possessed the skill to be able to make and produce a decent trance tune. Now that I have a bit more time on my hand I'm seriously gonna have a bash. Has anyone got any experience or top-tips they can pass on? I am also looking for some software to assisst and would also like to hear from those who know about such things.
