id suggest writing about anything random then distorting the vocals, filtering and adding a shit load of delay. about secrets id just suggest make sure the vocals arent about anything that makes sense, its an important rule in trance that tracks with sensible lyrics are senseless...

Or record nonsense and play it backwards.

Consider (if you want) trance and lyrics as being on opposite ends of a spectrum. The more of one you have, the less of the other you have.

Obviously, there are exceptions (probably many), but IMO lyrics detract from the music, unless the singer's voice is used as more of an 'instrument' rather than having the song being more focused on the words.

I think it is important to find a source of words of wisdom and then build up your lyrics from there. Take, for example, these wise words of wisdom from BlackSheep's tune called 'Pass the 40'. You may want to juggle the lyrics around, add, or take them away. Just make sure you don't infringe any copyright. Anyway, here are the lyrics:

I'm the suger dick daddy,
Fuck what you think.
Pass the 40 right by me
Cause you know I don't drink.
I remain sober when I drop a hit,
But I put gum in my ass cause I like to pop shit.
When it comes to pullin' gums I might do it.
But put your guard up Black
And I'm a run right through it.
Don't sleep on the side
Thinkin' I'm easy to beat.
Cause I'1l be up in that ass like a bike seat.
And when it comes to boneing I'm Mr Erecticy
Hoes come by the crib for a free hysterectomy.
I've got a dick that I brag about,
I put it in fast then I drag it out.
Girls, I'll be the special friend see,
Cause your man suffers from pseudo-penis envy.

Suppose you can have singing lyrics or just speaking lyrics. I've looked on sites for poetry or any speaking that sounds good, then apply loads of reverb and FX and it can soound quite good.

take a 80s song and stick a supersaw in there

You must be confused. There are no kick-ass trance lyrics.

Posted by Mr.Mystery on Sep-29-2006 12:05:

It has to be about the following:

Heaven, angels, xtc and/or lost love. Otherwise they just won't be proper trance lyrics.

I cant wait to hear the track that first takes infuluence from some Black Metal and writes about fantasy lands and goblins...Personally that would be kick ass.

whatever you do, don't add vocals to a trance tune (unless you use it as effects). Make a vocal and build the tune around it.

Posted by Philby on Sep-29-2006 13:45:

you can't
just remix some other non-trance tune instead

i think it wouldnt hurt to have more trance songs out there that have a lot of words to it, like underworld does. all trance that has vocals for the past 15 years have followed the same formula, its getting old.

No I didn't. And I tried, damnit, I tried.

Easiest way is to find an unknown/rarely heard of vocalist trying to find a way to the mainstream: Kirsty Hawkshaw et al

Listen to their album

Literally buy their lyrics off their best downtempo ballad effort

Add your own production element

et Voila.

This is how Just Be, The Loves We Lost, and countless other Tiesto productions were made :-)

How about buck the trend and actually try to write interesting lyrics for a trance song. I believe that would be a first.

I heard most people who write trance lyrics get their ideas while playing in traffic. So there, the secret is out.
