There's a good compilation to get you started, it's called The Kings of Funk, compiled by The Rza and Keb Darge.

Also, you can look for The Funky 16 Corners...a lot of really rare and underground funk tracks. Lots of good shit on there.

Actually if you check out all of the releases on Stone's Throw, you'll find there's lots of funk compilations there.
