Question Ideas for how to incorporate Ableton into my setup alongside my CDJ's?

Really trying to figure out the best way to incorporate Ableton into my live setup alongside the CDJ's.

What I'm wondering is what, very specificly, the best way to set up Ableton with my CDJ's/EFX500/Xone 62/iBook in order to be able to drop various loops and samples through Ableton when I play live.

I am ridiculously new to all of this, so I guess if anyone could explain this in as simple of terms as possible, I'd really appreciate it. Thanks in advance for any help!

Cheers!

If you have more than 2 channels on your mixer and a multi-output soundcard you can route ableton channels to the outputs and from there input those into the other channels on your dj mixer. Then you can just plop in a sample or loop whenever you want and still use your cdjs and all of your mixers functions. Granted you won't be able to use the cdjs or the mixer to control Ableton, but it doesn't seem like you want to do that. Also, it is a very inexpensive option - compared to buying a mixer with midi controls or buying a seperate midi controller and not having the ability to do everything with your cdjs. To test it out all you need a head phone size (forgot the technical term for it) to rca audio cable and to plug it into your mixer. See if that works and if you could see yourself worknig that way. I myself have never set this up, but am going to try it soon - however, I have read about many people who do this and say that it has worked.

Personally the way I would go about it, is get a hold of something like THIS to use for syncing the tempo from your DJ gear to Ableton, then have an external soundcard for your output from your ibook to your mixer, and get an external midi controller like the XSession to control your samples and loops from.

Thanks Danny - That's exactly what I was lookin' for. I have a fairly nice external sound card already, and for the time I think I'll probably just try to map things to my Oxygen 8 keyboard until I find an external MIDI surface I like more/can afford

One other question though, are there any other products like that out there already? (This one is only available for pre-order)

This is exactly what I've been trying to figure out for a while now (seeing as how Rob and I have damn-near the same setup ). So, thanks for the info. Looks like that'll be two Red Sound products I'll be purchasing in the near future.

i've always imagined myself using ableton as a sampler. acapellas, extra beats, effects, stabs, etc. etc.

Or you could just use tap & nudge functions in ableton, don't forget to set quantization to none. If you are used to beatmatching, then this should be no problem to you.

I did this few times now spinning versus with my friend, two Technics TT, DJM600 and Ableton. Quite a fun
