Paul Van Dyk Wins A Medal

Text by Jonty Skrufff (Skrufff.com)

Superstar DJ Paul Van Dyk was officially recognised by Berlin authorities this week in a fancy ceremony in the German capital, where he was awarded a medal of honour (Landesverdienstorden) in recognition of his service to the state.

The trance hero, who received his gong from Berlin mayor, Klaus Wowereit becomes one of only 400 Germans holding the award, putting him alongside architects and tops arts establishment figures, much to his delight.

"This award is considerably more prestigious than the other prizes and awards I have won to date," said PVD in a statement outlining his pride.

"It stands for something that is more important to me other than my work as a DJ and producer: encouraging young people and improving their opportunities for the future, he added.

The globe trotting workaholic has remained based in Berlin throughout his career though chatting to Skrufff recently admitted he was less than impressed with the citys current club scene.

It hurts me when I have to say it, because I love the city so much and I always support the city wherever I can, but the time that Berlin was hip and cool was about three or four years ago, he complained last year.

Living in Berlin is much cheaper than, for example, New York, so many people moved here, but because they can easily survive, they all seem to have become very lazy, he grumbled. This is the problem with Berlin. It always holds you back somehow. For example, if you phone your graphic designer you always find him sitting in a coffee shop or wherever, that's kind of normal here, said PVD

How is it disgusting to recognise someone for contributing to causes that support those less fortunate than themselves? Even if you think he's "crappy" it doesn't negate the fact he's heavily active in charity work. Whoever chooses to acknowledge him for that you're going to take that up with them as it has nothing to do with PVD. Holy fuck bitterbus.

I have never heard of PVD doing any charity work what so ever...Look at YoureadyB (David Ace), now thats a hero....He basically did what none of us would ever do...He created a house event for Cancer...Did i see anyone award him for anything hell no....Just because pvd is the worlds #1 dj (which is a crock) all of the sudden they recognize him for doing something...Its all bull shit

Futhermore, why didn't they give him an award like this from before...He was still doing what he does as a dj...think about it

ofcourse he was. but they dont give medals out like choclate cake on a fat guys wedding. u have to prove urself over the years and its not like u do a couple of things and here comes a medal. he has proven himself over the years and hence he got a medal. kinda like Nobel prize. it comes when its time and not just automatically once u do something nice.

as for your argument of YouReadyB and PvD well PvD is a name that is very common in Germany and in the world of EDM. to alot of people he is a sort of a guide a mentor etc etc so giving him the award makes more sense rather than giving it a guy whose nobody heard of beyond Toronto. dont get me wrong i am not saying YouReadyB doesnt deserve anything he deserves everything that he has worked for and people who know him and know what he did and is doing support him in every way.

by the way PvD did alot of work for KAtrina victims. he also did shows in Asia when Tsunami hit to raise money for the victims there. he also toured India to help with food aids and poverty. he did rock the vote tour and thats only few to name.

So are you saying that ANYONE that does ANYTHING for the less fortunate should get an award?

Not to mention the reason PvD got an award was not because of his dj abilities...it was b/c of the charity work he has done. Just b/c you have heard of it, doesn't mean he doesn't deserve it.

In General, PvD has *always* had a strong social concience and I feel his contributions worldwide deserve recognition.

cool, congrats to him.

But why isnt PvD coming to Toronto? is it because the promoters aren't inviting him here? or is it because he thinks he is too good to waist a day performing in lame city like Toronto? He is teasing the shit out of me!!
