Question

Hi there TranceAddicts,

I know trance is divided in let me call them "regions" (Can't find the right English word for it at the moment :-)The ones I know R:

- Trance
- Vocal Trance
- Goa Trance
- Hard Trance

Are there any more types of trance, and what ere the major differences between the types above?

Thought it would be a nice question

I personally like Trance where a nice female voice sings,..It makes me feel cold,..Just wonderfull

Greetings,

Blighty

Thumbs up

Well ofcource there are more trance genres like:
- Psychedelic Trance - it's the most underground style of trance I think. it's trance with more technoi feel, you know.. alot of synth's noise and stuff check out the song "life on mars" by Astral Projection, that one is pure psy-trance.. or check out Infected Mushroom..... Also Yahel's latest album "Cosmic Waves" is psy-trance..
- Acid-Trance - Arrr.. can't explain it clearly.. but it's basicly like psy-trance only much more simple.. like "Megamind - Taub (Picotto mix)" (that one is more hard-trance but it has acid lines in it.. oh well)
- Progressive Trance - trance with more emotion and feeling.... like Chicane.. Sasha.. etc
- Club-Trance - Trance that is played in the clubs .. I actually don't really know the difference between this genre and Hard-Trance.. Does anyone really know?

IMHO, goa and psychotrance are the same thing.... I qualify astral projection, infected mushroom et. al as goa... but it does make just as much sense to call them psychotrance. BTW if you want a fucking GREAT cd download Paul Oakenfield's Goa Mix, its soo good

Melodic Trance - does this exist or am I just talking out of my ass? Well this is where I'd put stuff like BT - Godspeed, Ayla - Ayla, Veracocha - erm can't remember the name...... but you get the idea!

Trancecore - the 180bpm type stuff, far different from hard trance IMHO

Tech trance - I've heard this term being tossed around before, anyone want to clue me in? What about tech house?

Posted by trancaholic on Nov-19-2000 19:33:

Tech trance? Well, the "new style" that are pioneered by Picotto, Piu and all the other guys at BXR is labeled Mediterrenean Progressive by themselves, but is labeled Hard tech trance in the UK.
Hope that helped.

No, goa isn't psy-trance.. Alot of people make that mistake.. Goa has more indian/arabien melodies and stuff.. that's why its called goa (it's a place in india ya know.. )

Here are some examples of artists, so you could know what I mean....

goa trance = Man With No Name, Juno Reactor ,Shidapu, Holymen.. most of Astral Projection's and MFG tracks are goa too..
psychedelic trance = Infected Mushroom, Luminus, Space Tribe ..

Fine fine.... they're still very close though

Here is what I know about trance categories:

Trance: The stuff you all know, lots of strings, synths, etc [Paul van Dyk stuff ..]
HardTrance: Almost the same as trance with amplified bass, rougher synths and higher bpm
PsyTrance: this one is more like Infected Mushroom .. (can't find a good description )
GOA: Like Trance Man already said, this music genre is really close to PsyTrance but with asian/indian influences .. Astral Projection and Juno Reactor are good examples
MelodicTrance: This one has more synths and (like the title says) is based on a melody (however you spell it ) BT is the best example I think .. I would class ATB in this category too (or in Dream category).. but some people will oppose themself about ATB in trance
ProgressiveTrance: Don't know this one very much, but I think it's more like trance with more buildups .. but not sure .. correct me if i'm wrong

I think that's it .. there's always stuff like TechTrance (listen to Marco V), AcidTrance and Trancecore but I don't know them very much .. For what I know, I would call Trancecore : ACID and Acidtrance : Nu-NRG .. but i'm not an expert in those styles .. maybe some other people can complete/correct my toughts ..

Cya guys!

Epic Trance!!!! just another word for Melodic Trance!!!.....

I'll attempt to define Progressive Trance:

Rather than have clearly definable sections, progressive trance evolves from a minimal state (similar to the older house of 7+ years ago) into a more involved state through the duration of the track.

Because this style needs to be done so well to not be boring, it tends to be mixed with another style. eg Hard with progressive elements.

An example would be Fixation - Andy Ling or virtually anything by Quivver. A lot of PvD's and BT's stuff has strong progressive elements.

Question

What about uplifting trance? Is there such a thing or did I create it in my mind?

Posted by TigerClaw on Nov-23-2000 10:09:

Cool

Examples of Acid trance would be groups like Pump Panel or Hardfloor, In case you didnt know, That track at the begining of the movie Blade was New Order-Confusion(Pump Panel Mix), That track is a great example of acid trance, plus Pump Panel's other track called Ego Acid, I recomend that one, Its one of my favorite acid trance tracks.

Stamina Daddy - yeaahhhh! Uplifting trance is what i live for!!!! Always puts a silly smile on my face when i'm driving. :P i think i'd classify dj tiesto - sparkles (transa mix) as uplifting. Also, madagascar - you're beautiful.

NOW, how does progressive house fit in? i discovered trance from a local dj who said he spun progressive house on this late night house show. he had played madagascar - you're beautiful, so i thought that would be classified as house. what's the answer?!?

Posted by Joel Fielder on Nov-23-2000 19:29:

Depends how old the track is.

House has changed a lot in recent years - it never used to have the same disco/funk/soul influence that it does now, it was much more minimal.

Prog house used to be similar to modern trance. There's a compilation called An Introspective of House released 6 years ago that's full of classic examples - it's damn good.

I don't see how you could really fit progressive elements into modern house since the modern house structure is so rigid (taken from disco) so I'd be interested to hear what this track you're talking about sounds like.

Posted by Kurve on Nov-24-2000 01:46:

well majority of Uplifting trance...like Tiesto and most of the big named djs...that mainly all Epic Trance...its uplifting

Thumbs up

don't forget dark trance.. though one could argue that it's just hard trance... Incidently does anyone have any morning trance floating around their computer... I've been told that it existed... as early morning music at parties .. in the early and mid 90's ... I suppose it must exist as i'm in the process of making a morning trance track right now... basically weird psychedellic noises... but with eurphoric .. light .. not overbarring melodies... but... does anyone else .. have any good examples of this form of music...
