Chicago House

What is it and why is everyone that plays it so cool?

...technically is not all house 'chicago house' since that is where house supposedly originated?

So far i have got that it is some kind of old school techish house.

I wouldn't call 'Chicago House' a subgenre of house itself, but seeing as it is technically where house originated some people may classify those DJs playing it as 'cool' as they seem to be able to dig way back in the record collection and pull out some very old gems people seem to have forgotten about.

As for what it sounds like? Disco-y, classic house sound. A lot of real instruments rather than synthesized ones, combined with basic loops on drum machines. Good party music. But as you can see, I've described it's sound as an combination of two other sub-styles. Haha.

The best description I've ever heard of Chicago house music is that it's "house that sounds like it could have been released at any time since 1993" (and that was from one of the jaded fucks on 4four.org so you know it must be accurate ).

If I was going to describe it, I'd say that it's pretty simple in composition (lots of loop-based stuff etc.) and - like Sly Guy said - lots of instrumental, disco type sounds. A lot of these divisions of genres based on geography haven't really been applicable for the past 10 years because the sounds have become much more global (I'd defy anyone, for instance, to distinguish between a house record released today in New York and one released in Chicago) but if you're looking for a definition, I think that's probably as close as you're gonna get.

theres a really good documentary floating around called 'Pump Up The Volume' and it details the differences in the early house sound between NY and chicago. Back then the NY sound was the more disco influenced sound of the two. The chicago sound was a bit tougher and a bit more raw sounding. Check it out, very interesting!

Agreed. Great doc, even for those who love other styles, simply because it explains the origins of everything since disco, from hardcore to breakbeat, it's well worth the 3 hours or so.

If you are really interested in early House from Chicago and NY check this site out ---

http://www.deephousepage.com/

You will find mixes from the godfathers of House (Knuckles, Levan, Owens, Humphries etc) dating from the late 1970s through the 1990s. Back when EDM was so much better.

Todays House is too techy and electroish....there is far less soul in it like it used to be.
