Ontario Changes Liquor Law

The reforms to the Liquor Licence Act, if passed, will let women monitor their drinks at all times, Government Services Minister Gerry Phillips said while announcing the bill at a university pub. "Patrons will never have to leave their drink unattended and risk someone slipping them drugs or otherwise tainting their beverage," said Phillips. The threat of drinks being spiked wasn't even considered when the liquor act was introduced in 1944, said Phillips. "Unfortunately, as society changes so does criminal behaviour." The proposed legislation, which will be introduced on Thursday, does not make it mandatory for bars to extend their liquor licence to cover bathrooms and hallways. Still, Phillips said businesses are well aware of the threat date rape drugs pose and will act accordingly. Nora Loreto, vice-president of education in the Ryerson University Students' Union, called the bill a "good first step." "It's good to see there are steps being taken by the government to try to address the issue of date rape," Loreto said at the university pub that hosted the press conference. "To be able to bring it into the washroom will be a really good way to make sure students always have their drinks on hand."

The Good:

It's about time we offer the ability for licenced establishments to actually be licenced! The idea that you cant drink in certain areas of a nightclub is ridiculous! Good for them for finally having a few brain cells active! haha

The Bad:

In a typical bureaucratic money grabbing government scheme, clubs will have to buy additional liquor licences for the washroom. Of course, they could have just made it automatic but how would the government make money??

The reasoning behind the change is bogus. The guy who introduced the legislation, Gerry Phillips was on tv saying that "we have never heard of anyone being drugged in this manner, but it's better to be safe than sorry". Yup, kneejerking laws at it's best! But hey, at least this time it ends up with a positive result!

Next item that needs review, Last call....

the problem is that with no last call, and drinking in public, the government has less power which ultimately means they make less money.

The government makes a fortune in liquor licence fees.

The worst are the laws that are designed to make the government money, that are disguised as laws to protect the public. Its a huge scam!

i find it realy anoying that u have to hide your booze when you are on the beach, i mean if u look around like 40% of beach patrons are drinking a beer or a smirnof ice, but then when security comes they hide it...

from what i've seen, its women only...which is kinda stupid...

usually u keep ur drinks on a table outside the bathroom that usually has a bouncer beside..i dont think anyone comes by and tosses "date rape drugs" with a bouncer right there

It's government fearmongering at its best but as i said it at least has a good outcome for once.

and whats with all this "allow drinking in public"?? LOL...ya right. Most "world class" cities don't allow this; why would conservative Toronto?

What is most annoying is not being able to bring your drink between different floors of a nightclub...

I also hate the no booze in the dj booth law. How stupid is that?

As for not carrying drinks upstairs and downstairs, I hate it, it forces you to chug your drink, but you know what? some fucking idiot is going to drop their drink resulting in broken glass or slippery stairs.

did you bother to find out how much the extra cost is?

did you bother to note that clubs could *easily* save the added fee by not having to post a bouncer/staff near washrooms to ensure that patrons don't bring in drinks? or have them instead performing SECURITY functions instead of being a glorified bathroom attendant?

of course not...becuse then you woulnd't be able to bitch about anything, lol.

I would have thought that you would at least be happy that establishments will have the option to apply for the license...instead of having it forced upon them.

I'd like to think that would eventually they will roll it into the overall licencse...but who knows. Outdoor/patio licenses are still separate too, right?

Moscow, NYC, Vegas ...etc

Sorry, I don't really support drinking in public. Someone will always abuse the system. If someone cleans up the homeless problem in Toronto, then I might be in favour of drinking in public.

No. Neither does Vegas. Those 2 cities are major tourist attractions so they need to be more lax on their public drinking laws than other cities. Moscow doesn't count either. That city has no laws.

As for New york, can you really walk down the street in Downtown NY with a beer in your hand without attracting attention from the cops?
