moving to another province

alright, has anyone has experience of moving to another province or far location from home?
a couple friends might be moving to edmonton and i'm think of going with them. i will be finding out and deciding where my current job is going soon.
now, for the people who have moved, how hard was it to settle down and how was the money crunch like?
also, is the risk worth it?

i moved from quebec to ontario...but ended up living with family to start off....then got sick of it and went on my own.

i was here for school then picked up better and better jobs...so the crunch wasnt so bad....

edmonton's cost of living is probably much less than ontario !!

Don't have much advice for you.

I moved from Alberta (Calgary) to Toronto w/ my family several years ago, when I was 13.

I was excited to move to the GTA. It was that difficult to settle down as I was looking forward to moving. If you had to move against your will, it might be a little more difficult to do.
It wasn't to too bad to settle down, as I started school right away, so I made friends and met people there.

As for money, money is always harder when you move to a new if you don't have a job, but the cost of living in Edmonton should be a lot cheaper than Toronto such as rent, food, general expenses.

The risk def. worth it if you want to move. You learn new experiences and meet tons of different people. Living in Western Canada is quite different from Toronto, and its good to experience that.

PS. Edmonton sucks btw

I don't have any personal experience but I know a HANDFUL of people who moved from Windsor to Calgary from a few months up to a few years and every single one of them loved it.

Windsor to Calgary would be a little different then Windsor to Edmonton :P haha.

I might be a bit bias as I was born in Calgary...

but Calgary >>> Edmonton

thats if i'm going.
i want to go but i don't have the money for it now. but i'm sure i can find a job in my field. just wondering really how hard it is to start a new life basically in a totally different place and how would you find a place to live when you get there.

I moved from the East Coast a few years ago to go to school here and try to make a go in "the big city". Is it an adjustment?... You bet your ass. Will you question your decision sometimes?.... Probably. But if you stick with it (and it is something you know you want to do), it can be extremely rewarding in alot of ways once you start getting traction in your new place or residence. Plus you truely learn the importance of maintaining your roots and your connection with your family when they are halfway across the country.

(p.s. considering the current economy of Alberta - and for the foreseeable future - not much of a risk financially imho.)

Do it do it do it do it do it.

There is nothing more satisfying than making a new home for yourself. Sure, money will be an issue, even if you end up making more because everything you do will cost money when you first get there.. you will want to explore and socialize every night until you build your new 'family'. Mind you, if you are going with a couple of friends, it will lessen the latter point.

I miss home no.1 every day, my wonderful family and very special friends that have known me for what feels like forever BUT moving to a different place is so enriching in many other ways and let's face it, you can always come back!!!

Give yourself 18 months to feel like you remotely belong there as that is how long it takes. After that point, if you are still not happy, come back. As for living arrangements (I didn't do this but it would be my advice) get a room in a shared house, it is amazing how much quicker you will feel settled with a 'local' or two around.

P.S. the Albertan economy has rocketed! Basic admin staff are commanding 15-20 per hour... I may, just may put in a transfer to go to the Calgary office when it opens in January....

it's one thing to move within a city, it's a completely different thing to move to a different province!

make sure you go see the palce that you are moving to first and good luck with all your new adventureS!

BTW - winters are quite the big deal in Edmondton! and everyon eI know has moved from there, not moved to there!
