-- When to replace needles??
When to replace needles??
When do you guys replace your needles?
I use the Ortofon concorde pro silver.
I've broken needles from stupid mistakes and other misc crap.
I usually replace them every month just for the hell of it, but I never really know when the recommended time to replace them is.
My drunk ass friend passed out while spinning records on my tables and left 2 records spinning for 8 hours. The needle wore a small little groove at the end of the record (no damage to the vinyl really). I want to know that after those 8 hours, if I should replace the needle? They sound fine, but I am just not sure that needles are meant to play at the end of the record.... for 8 hours.
(and yes my careless friend is paying for replacements)
i just replace mine when the sound level starts to go down.. like one side will be louder than the other..
I bought the multipack of ortofons, and the guy who sold em to me told me that he didnt want to see me buying them for another 3 years(meaning I had 1 on, 2 in the case, =3 years, so 1 year per set)
so I think you are spending wayy too much money!
I think generally needles are durable; especially Ortofon ones. once a year is probably a good bet. For me, if the sound level starts to go down (one side louder than the other), normally a clean sweep of the needles with a brush should do the trick.
I don't know about the 8 hour thing, though.. the situation sounds too bizarre to warrant a suggestion.
i have ortofons as well.
the manual says if you spin allot replace them every 6 months.
i do like 6-9 months. but don't let time decide. when your needles start to jump when you que your records, or your highs just don't sound as clear as they used to be - replace em. no point in replacing them too often as ull blow cash, but don't keep em for like 3 years or you'll damage ur records

no clue.........my Ortofons are still kickin' like the first day i put them in

I have some pretty shitty stanton carts, 520's I think (the DJ Craze models), and I've prob gotten like 50 hours out of them and now the cymbols are starting to sound shitty. When you start to lose sound quality you need to new needles. Any recommendations for my next pair?
ortofons
For my Trackmasters it says that you should check ur stylus every 250-300 hours, so i guess you can use ur Ortofons for like 6 months or so...
ortofons are so goddayam expensive!
They Ortofons are expensive, but they are from Denmark, and I think they look smoother than the Stantons. Their initial cost is a lot ($80-$200 depending on model), but the replacement needles are only $30.
American DJ makes a pretty cool needle called the Banana, which has a similar sleek appearance the Ortofon's have.
forget appearance.. the ortofons have sound quality and tracking ability that is unsurpassed.
i had my ortofons in 1.5 to 1.75 grams for a while.. then i got a few records that had spindle holes too large, so when i qued up the record by hand the needle would jump.. so i put the needles up to 2.25 which is still a small ammount, and they won't jump w/o me hitting them.
no other needle can do that

| Originally posted by DJ_Kismuth No, i dont have the American DJ Banana, I use the ortofon concorde silver. (shown below) It's $99US and $30 for the replacement needle. I've never had a problem with them, they look nice, sound great and perform well. ![]() Both cost the same. I do not have any experience with the American DJ needle |

Thanks. I guess Cartridges are the Thing that is like Protecting the needle... so.... iguess when u have the cartridge u dont need to buy another cartridge... just the needles.... is that ok?... or am I wrong? |
i use the shure m35s's, depending what you're using the needles for, and i'll assume trance since this is a trance board, the shures can be damn good sound reproduction. i didn't think ortofon's were worth the extra $75 or whatever to the cost of the shure's, at least for what i'm using them for.
if you can, get the ortofons. if not get whats in your price range. simple as that.

Well, if i think i notice some kind of sound degredation with my stylus i just bust out a new one and compare it with the old one using the same record. this usually does the trick if you cant remember when the last time you changed styli was.(like me
