For those who pay gas on their rent

My landlord just called me and proposed lowering my rent $50 for me to start paying a gas bill. A brand new unit is being placed in the building, so I would assume it is more efficient then older ones but I am still kind of skeptical on the price of this per month. Sure, it will be higher in the winter then the spring or summer but I am hoping it isn't all that bad. So was wondering for those who rent out of an apt and pay a gas bill what kinda damage I'll be looking at on the bill. Thanks!

I think it depends on where you live, but mine doesn't go above $50/mo.

All my utilities are included with rent.

Is that for the winter though?

Yeah. Gas isn't really that expensive.

Keep in mind I live in Southern California, even in the winter i'm not using my heater too much.

in the winter months, it can get pretty high. when i lived with girls roommate, they always crank up the heat so our bills were pretty massive but when I lived with my buddy, we just stuck it out and our computers becomes the source of heat.

What were the bills like, if you don't mind me asking?

if your not careful the gas bill can be like 100 a month if you leave windows and doors open etc. if you are careful then you don't have anything to worry about.

it all depends on what you used to heat your home with. right now, at my parent place, they use natural gas which cost them around $200 Can per two months during the winter months, usually from december to march. my parent friend use a combination of natural gas and firewood stove which costs them about $50 Can per month during those months. Natural gas prices is getting expensive ever year.

Call the electric company and ask for a consumption estimate. I am sure they have things of the similar nature online.

If there is a chance that you might spend more than 600 $ a year on gas than you don't want to accept your rent being lowered by 50 bucks and you having to pay the gas bill out yourself.

Depends on a ton of stuff - how old your apt is, the climate where you live, how well insulated the walls and ceilings are, how old the windows are, how drafty the windows and doors are, and so on. For 3 bedroom apts in PA, you can figure about $200/month for dec and jan, less the others. Gas isn't as cheap as it used to be. Last year prices wnet up 40% over the year before. It's not much cheaper than electric anymore here in PA.

I've got a pretty small 1 bedroom apartment. Sounds like the guy is just going to knock off the rent how much we pay for the gas, so this might not be so bad afterall.

nothing beats propane and propane accessories!

gas is frickin expensive. at my last apartment (2 bedroom) the power bill got to be like, 200 some dollars a month during the winter. gas is what killed our usual $50 electric bill.

It wouldn't be worth it in phili, turn down the offer unless he goes up to 85.
