Calgary student killed by flying rock
Published: Friday, October 20, 2006

CALGARY - Grief counsellors were on hand at a Calgary Catholic school Thursday to help friends and classmates of a teen who died after he was hit in the head by a large rock.

Kevin Gonsalez, a Grade 8 student, died after he was pulled off life-support Wednesday.

He and his friend Christian Florez were experimenting Tuesday afternoon when they put a fist-sized rock on the bus trap - a pit covered by metal bars spaced to allow only buses to pass.

When a bus drove over the rock, it propelled the stone at Gonsalez, hitting him just over the eyes.

Deana Helton, critical response team supervisor for the Calgary Catholic School District, said counsellors were on hand Thursday to help students cope with Gonsalez's death.

She said most students Wednesday were shocked by what had happened and offered up prayers for Gonsalez's condition to improve.

Well... that's just fucked.

Very tragic. I knew someone's mom who got hit in the head by a small- to medium-sized rock and it killed her as well. Lord knows how fast the thing was traveling.

what were they trying to do?

Posted by Swamper on Oct-20-2006 22:28:

This is sad - but - I think it would've been worse if they ended up killing someone else. That kid would really be fucked for life after that.

"Flying Rock" would be a cool name for a rock band. When asked about the origins of their name they could tell this story.

i think it is more suited as a native canadian/american name.

I was a victim of a flying rock too. This was at an early age. I think I was about 7 or 6. But because the distance the rock traveled before hitting me was much bigger than that of this accident I wasn't that hurt. Plus, it hit my chest. Crying was difficult though because I was having trouble breathing.

Sad ending for this kid. Watch out for those flying rocks. They are out there.
