Hello! anyone here speak hebrew

what exactly does the word shalom mean. My boy has it tattooed in hebrew on his back and he said it means peace in hebrew, but then someone told me it meant hello or bye. Can anyone verify this for me.

serious answer, i think it means peace be with you, which can translate to hello, or goodbye

"peace be with you" when u see someone and "peace be with you" as ur saying bye to someone.

Hrm....that's a pretty loaded question

Basically, the word "shalom" primarily means peace. When people use it as a greeting they're just saying "how's your peace" for the most part. It's a lot like aloha or cheers or the word 'shit,' very versatile but in the end you're saying the same thing.

If you saw the movie Aladdin (awesome movie ) you might remember the opening scene with the travelling merchant...he starts off saying something like "Ahhhh, Salam and good evening my worthy friends!" Salam is the arabic word for the same concept, derived from the same three letter root S-L-M. Hell, the word Islam itself comes from that same S-L-M root, also meaning 'peace'

Its pretty cool how identical Hebrew and Arabic are actually. From what little of them I know I'd say they're at least as close as Dutch and german.

Shalom means Peace.

A common greeting in Hebrew is "shalom aleichem" meaning "peace be upon you", the customary response is "aleichem shalom" (the Arabic equivalent is "As-salaamu Alaikum" and "wa `Alaykum As-Salām"). In modern times this has been shortened to simply "shalom".

So in summary the word means "peace", but is also commonly used as a greeting, much as we use the word Hello and upon parting as we use goodbye
