Trance: Sydney vs Amsterdam
go!
u got the wrong australian city
lol yeah..was gonna say...
pfft
Proper thread would be "Hobart vs Ibiza"
Amsterdam ftw i recoon bigger raves, massive amoout of people filled to the max , comeplely differnt raves
Even if there was no trance in Amsterdam, I still say Amsterdam!!!
Why Sydney, is there trance there???
^^nah mate you can't be serious. I mean I think Sydney in a lot of places is a pretty dirty city (ie Oxford St ect) and univiting... corporate greed, skyscrapers and crazy homeless people walking around (sad to see shit metal heath services in Sydney). All that having said Amsterdam is much dirtier. The redlight district is the centre of town and every morning they hose the coblestone street down from all the garbage. It stinks. People just piss in the street whereever. There are too many sleazy strip joints and way to many trashy tourist shops on the main streets. Being afraid of muscley leather fetish gay guys on there way to and from the gay fetish clubs wich is on the same street as the hostels was kinda disturbing. (I don't have anything against gay people its just that in that situation I felt unsafe at night. There are public urinals along some main streets to wich is gross. The canals everywhere would be pretty beautiful if the water wasn't an opaque green!
Okay okay. Firstly I LUV Melbourne... no seriously I fell in love with it 1st time I visited there last year for Godskitchen and was addicted by the second time I went there for an all clubbing all raving weekend for Two Tribes this year... (ie bass station, 2tribes, PHD then sleep then Vinyl Warning, then mix at freinds house
)
Okay so I am originally from Sydney and been well into the trance scene there. Wasn't expecting Melbourne to be so good as Sydney is a bigger city.. but boy I was wrong!!
Anyway visited Amsterdam for a week back in '04 before going to Nature One in Germany and Zurich Street Parade and Energy in Switzerland plus a bunch of clubs in Berlin. Honestly the big clubs in Sydney are much better than Amsterdam (and probably quite a bit of Europe). I went to probably the biggest club in Amsterdam, Escape. It's fairly big.. almost as big as Home but a lot older dirtier no wikked lighting lasers ect like you find back home and you gotta pay for the toilet wich is just insane esp with alcohol/drug consumption. Same with Berlin... Tresor is probably the best but still it is small and old the Casino Club with PvD plays at sometimes is basically a wharehouse that is decorated a little.. Looks rundown and even the 'Casino' sign had letters broken off when I was there... (it's a joke that the voted worlds number one DJ holds residencies there! What a dump!) Trance isn't played in Amsterdam (or for that matter Berlin) in the big clubs on a weekly basis like Sydney. They are much more into Dutch Hardcore or Gabba (like the Thunderdome Parties) or clubs that play a kind of club/tech house as with Escape. Obviously the raves over there are world class and simply amazing
... but bottom line the clubs there suck compared to Sydney or Melbourne. I didn't get a chance to visit clubs in Zurich, Switzerland (coz the weekend I was raving at Street Parade then Energy
) but from what I hear some great trance DJs but clubs are small.
I was surprised at what was popular and played at the main clubs in Amsterdam and Berlin. Especially since most of the good vinyl comes from there. Strange. Melbourne has a bigger following in this scene in terms of all the clubs and raves on every weekend. It's amazing to see the kids in the morning just walking around the city in phatties on their way to PHD or some other recovery party after a rave.
ps. after spending 10months away from Australia I was homesick for how they dance!! Nothin I saw around the world beats watchin a whole crowd of people doin tha Melbourne Shuffle.
-drools-

Anywhere in Australia vs Anywhere in Europe is probably a losing battle.

Ah, well, considering I'm not even FROM Australia and that some Aussies told me that Sydney has the biggest trance scene in the country and Melbourne more of a "bar scene" that's into house, I figured this would be the thread to start. Different perceptions from different people.
So if Melbourne is a bigger home to trance than Sydney is. Jump to that! What well-known EDM artists are from Australia?

Mike Nichol should be up there soon.. he's about the biggest I'd say in terms of trance..
Peewee Ferris had that track "Genesis" which did big things back in 99
and rather than saying

If only I had a grenade.
Melbourne pwns sydneys
where else would u get crazy biatches like MissyM ?
The trance scene down here is good because most of the people who listen to it are big fans of the music. Havnt been europe yet to see what its like and im sure it would be frekkin crazy, but from what i see on videos and stuff it sure looks insane. Melbourne crowds are much smaller but the people are generally nice and the community is usually very close.
We have a few decent producers out here, a few already named above (steve may, luke chable, mike nichol, pappa etc)
As long as the scene is kept alove down here il be happy.
there are a few bars around melbourne, i even play at one. THey are cool because the crowds are small and nice to deal with, generally get a good reaction from small crowds. The good thing however, is the big events are only done a few times a year, so when they do happen they are fuckin awesome full stop.
someone needs to re: title this thread seriously
which one vman??
MissyM... I don't know what you're so bitter about. For sure you get people who go overboard on the drug scence (alcohol included) at any parties even in Europe too. Unfortunaty our society (doesn't in general teach children about moderation and responsibe drug use (not to mention educating truthfully on the risks and what research or facts are out there are) Australian politics really aren't as open minded with harm reduction and truthful drug education initiatives such as Europe (pill testing to name one) so yes you will probably find more 'messed up' people in the Australian scene. It's just one of those things you accept for the time being
What I wes trying to say before is that I was surprised by how big and how fresh the trance/hard dance scene is in Melbourne. It reminded me of the big once a year raves they have in Germany and Switzerland. Yet in Melbourne it's probably more a normal weekend!! I luved it how its kinda normal for ravers to wonder around town in Melbourne during the day going to day clubs all dressed up in raver gear.. ect ect becasue there is so much going on! Only the other day I was looking though some of the bonus stuff on the 2nd DVD of Melbourne Shuffler. I was amazed at the footage of the Melbourne street parties. It so reminds me of Europe or at least I am guessing maybe what the street parties where when the were getting stated many years ago in Europe. It's cool to think that rest of the public can't hide from the fact that there is such a big rave or trance/hard dance scene in Melbourne and probably just have to accept it's as part of our society.... I think this kind of awareness is good for our society and helps to destroy the pulic fear of the rave community that has been pushed politically. I'm sure we are all aware of the bullshit that tv programs like Today Tonight or A Current Affair churn out.
When I think of Sydney's rave, trance/hard dance scene, yeah it is quite big but I think it is still hiding from the public view. There really isn't any decent day clubs setup and nothing I know of that would come close to a street party. Also I think there is probably a tougher political or at least law enforcement attitute. It sucks seeing the overwhelming police presence outside the raves at Sydney once it ends or even roaming round accross the dance floor with dogs ect in the middle. I mean out of many raves I've been to and out of the thousands and thousands of people I've seen I've yet to see a fight breakout or something serious happen such as weapons being pulled, racial or gang violence ect ect that would warrant such an extreme ammount of police presence. I think the drug safety issue (alcohol included) is better left in the hands onsite safety and medical workers who are already doing a great job at raves/clubs.
Alright... sorry for the vent...
I'm done talking about politics again.

), and generally speaking people are more welcoming and friendly than in Sydney - no pun intended to anyone from Sydney.
I felt more at home in Toronto than I do in Sydney! | quote: |
