I gotta do a speech! Need some thoughts....

I have to do a speech on "Why private gun ownership should be banned in the US." It's 7 to 10 minutes max. Based on that topic, do you think it would be TOO specific (ie not well-rounded enough) if I just focus on gun violence involving kids as my "specific purpose" on why private gun ownership should be banned? I've done speeches before but it's funny, this is my first one in english (the language, i mean).

*******NB: I'm NOT asking your opinion on gun ownership, I'm just asking for your opinions on the already-selected speech content, so don't turn this into an NRA convention or some shit.********

So, I want my specific purpose to be: To persuade why private ownership of guns should be banned due to an extremely high number of children/teenage deaths each year.

Working Thesis: Private gun ownership leads to an extraordinary amount of child injury and death each year in the US.

The more I think about this, the more confused I get, agh!

Thanx for ur help peeps!

well, my thoughts on that is simple.

either ban guns completely or make guns available for EVERYONE.

that is all.

Not too specific at all; it's already a huge issue. Have you done research? Do you have statistics?

yes, tons and tons of it. (working on organizing it all into 3 main points now).. i keep losing myself in the rabbit hole of research, clicking link after link on NEAHIN and CDF organization sites and shit like that...kind of like the wikipedia syndrome

If women have the right to bare children, men should have the right to bare arms!

I win!

easy..... kids cant drink til theyre 21+, not to mention, get into clubs in most of the USA at the age also.... the fact that 14 y/o's and lower can fly planes and use guns is sad.... dont really have too much to add to the issue unfortunately

omg, what is up with the comprehension skills today?

I am in a gun community and I been sport shooting since child's age. I am sorry if this is off-topic or if create more problems for you speech preparation:

I think the problem is with guns being sold on a black market in USA & the problem with some states selling guns right out a store to costumers with verified driving licence. (should be more restrictions)

Posted by LuNaSeA on Oct-25-2006 01:55:

ugh, why did i even bother posting on here, i swear....

as opposed to private gun ownership as i am, in the end its "private" gun ownership, so its a very tough, almost impossible issue... however, i would, if i were you, give statistics as to how many deaths and violent acts are committed each year by kids with guns in their homes, willingly or by accident, plus give some specific examples to captivate the listeners into the more "dramatic" image of a 4 year old shooting another 4 year old or something....

when that is said and done, reach a sensible agreement with the crowd that gun ownership in this country will never be banned, but propose solutions to restrict as much as possible, some possibly:

a) ban on guns in the home.... propose that guns be kept in a public guarded safe-house for all members of a particular "zone", so to speak, that can be entered with password/fingerprint/etc.... when its hunting season, go to the "storage-center-like" safe-house and get your gun and have fun... and return when done... there should be a 12-hour limit that it can be out of the safe-house without "touching base" or signing it back in, otherwise you get a fine (the fines will help pay for this program)

b) not only should buying a gun not be so easy, but actually owning it should be too... require a safe to be bought upon gun purchase (at a cheap price, since its for the better of our society, no?) if the whole public "safe-house" idea doesnt work... it shouldnt be a matter of having a key to open it up, kids can do that.... there should be a number-lock as well as whatever other ways to make it child-tamper-proof

hope this helps a little

sorry? care to elaborate or just posting another useless commment to try to get people who don't care all rowdied up? feel free to participate if you have something worthwhile to say, cuz usually u think u do.

@ eco: thanks for the info, much appreciated. I don't have to state solutions, just have to state my case and i'm wondering if my thesis is good enough or if i'm not making a good enough stand... i know theses are statements that you have to prove but on one hand, some people consider theses must be more than just statements of fact but also taking a stand on something that people are likely to disagree with... why is the thesis always the toughest part

if this is ^^ your intent, then clearly a focus on children is warranted.

if the assignment is this, however,

and the goal of the speech is to persuade rather than inform, then a strict focus on children is overly delimiting.
