Unhappy Homework and Procrastination

Grrrr. I am frustrated.

I have about 10 pages more to type today for a Philosophy midterm and won't let myself leave my apartment until it's done, but unfortunately it seems I'm finding anything and everything to do around the house instead of work.

So far I have:

- Cleaned my room, the bathroom, and the kitchen
- Vacuumed the entire apartment
- Talked to Bas on MSN
- Posted on TA
- Organized/Burned new music
- Gone to class.

I can't seem to motivate myself what-so-ever to do any writing - In fact, the only thing I have done well is sticking to my guns and not smoking any pot until my work is done, which may seem a foregone conclusiont o some, but unfortunately I smoke a bit more than I probably should.

So, anyone have any recommendations for what I can do to whip myself into shape? I hate the fact that I procrastinate so much, so often, but I can't seem to find a way to beat it.... Am I just a lazy douche?

Ack.

/rant

/wasting more time not doing what I should be.

you should use your getting high powers!

I have the SAME EXACT problem. Sometimes I catch myself staring at the wall......then I realize I've been day dreaming for about 5 minutes and start working again.

Posted by Akridrot on Oct-25-2006 20:36:

But seriously, you don't seem like you have lots of other shit to deal with, or be stressed out about. So the best advice I could give you is go somewhere quiet, and just get right into it, immediately.

When I was in high school, I procrastinated like a bitch (lord knows how I graduated). I realize now that the reason I procrastinated so much was because I was "thinking about doing the work," instead of actually doing it. So if I stopped thinking, and just forced myself to write - poof! - there goes the procrastination.

yea I clean when I procrastinate. During finals my place is spotless.

force urself to do it, set up a nice reward afterwards, i dunno say like a line or a big doobie or something (i dunno what ur into)

Posted by tctitan on Oct-25-2006 20:40:

i was the same way, typing up papers 3 in the morning the night before. adhd ftw. but seriously, the funny part is that i would write my best work under the most pressure, it just seriously made me focus. paper could be due 3 weeks from now, nope, wouldn't touch it 'till day before.

Don't do this! You will be bludgeoned severely about the head and shoulders!

quote:

Barely completed in time, the paper may actually earn a fairly good grade; whereupon the student experiences mixed feelings: pride of accomplishment (sort-of), scorn for the professor who cannot recognize substandard work, and guilt for getting an undeserved grade. But the net result is reinforcement: the procrastinator is rewarded positively for his poor behavior. ("Look what a decent grade I got after all!") As a result, the counterproductive behavior is repeated over and over again.

Never do it again. Source (damn good source too): http://www.sas.calpoly.edu/asc/ssl/procrastination.html

I lolled.
I do that too. Just keep thinking about some random things and then wake up feeling pretty embarrassed about it .

I've been on TA pretty much the whole day today. And I'm supposed to do job hunt. But I have so much inertia to start new things, and the whole process seems so daunting.

just like i told you in the last PM i sent you, promise yourself some sort of reward.

you'll be more motivated to get your shit done because you'll be working towards that reward! you just have to make sure your will power is strong enough so that you won't cave in and cut yourself breaks in order to get the reward sooner.

or... go buy one of the new 12oz Red Bulls. worked great for me last night.

that's a great idea.

unfortunately it's really hard to deal with something like procrastination when it grabs hold of you on the very last day before the deadline. At that point, I usually just give into it until about midnight when sheer panic kicks in and I realize i'm fucked unless I start writing. After you cross this inevitable moment, you'll work nonstop at an amazing efficiency. You'll probably even have time to toke up in the sunrise hours just before class.

I don't believe that this works for everybody. You will end up tired the next day, and I just think it sucks. Some people work good under pressure, some.

Even if you do end up doing fuck all, that deadline will still be in the back of your mind. So even when you're not doing work, you're worrying. I'd rather get over with and waste time later, knowing that I'm finished, then waste time and worry about a deadline.

hard work may pay off in the long run, but procrastination pays off NOW!
