Women who do not cover up are similar to abandoned "meat"...

...says so this Cleric.

Cleric blames women's attire for attacks

Women who do not cover up are similar to abandoned "meat" making them responsible for sexual attacks, a senior Islamic cleric has said.

Sheik Taj Aldin Alhilali has outraged female Muslim leaders with comments he made during a Ramadan sermon to 500 worshippers in Sydney last month, News Limited newspapers report.

"If you take out uncovered meat and place it outside on the street, or in the garden or in the park, or in the backyard without a cover, and the cats come and eat it ... whose fault is it, the cats or the uncovered meat?" the sheik asked.

"The uncovered meat is the problem."

"If she was in her room, in her home, in her hijab (islamic headdress), no problem would have occurred."

He also alluded to the Sydney rapes in 2000 where four women were separately gang-raped by a group of young Muslim men, including Bilal Skaf, who originally received a 55-year sentence, later reduced.

He said there were women who "sway suggestively" and wore make-up and inappropriate clothes, "and then you get a judge without mercy (rahma) and gives you 65 years," News Limited reports.

The Sheik went on to say women were "weapons" used by "Satan" to control men and when it comes to adultery the responsibility falls on the woman 90 per cent of the time.

He defended the sermon about adultery and theft when contacted by News Limited, which obtained and translated a recording of the 17-minute talk.

But he did clarify his reference to the Sydney gang rapes and said Skaf was guilty and deserved such a sentence.

Young Muslim adviser Iktimal Hage-Ali does not wear a hijab and said it is not worn to prevent rape or harassment and it is up to "males to learn how to control themselves".

Australia's most prominent female Muslim leader, Aziza Abdel-Halim, echoed the young adviser's statements, saying she was "disgusted and offended" by the Shiek's statements.

So, what age are we living in ?

Any comments from the feminists in teh COR ?

Saw this on another forum, huge debate about it. My stance is:

Regardless of what a woman wears, or how drunk she is, it's never her fault for being raped. People need to stop thinking this way.

Drunk

you would be surprised how behind the "age" different cultures are! let's say in South Korea, women were just able to vote less then ten years ago and women still can not smoke in public!
in Marocco they too are behind the times.

EDit
This article is unreal, no woman deserves to be raped!!!

Plus who the fuk is going to leave meat outside in the sun if they are going to eat it later!? take a joke!

Sheik Taj Aldin Alhilali is a Muslim leader here in Australia.

I think that his comments are disgusting.

I can't believe how out of touch he is with the rest of society. We don't live in a Muslim country. We live in a secular, multicultural country. If he wants to live in a Muslim country where women have no rights, he can go live in Saudi Arabia.

Australia is a western country where women are treated with respect and equality, not like second-rate humans that must be subservient to all men.

The most disgusting thing about his comments is the context in which they are made. There have been several high-profile gang rape cases in Sydney in the last couple of years where groups of Muslim youths have attacked innocent girls. They have taunted their victims, calling them "aussie sluts" etc. Some of these rapists have later blamed their victims for the rape in court, saying that they dressed provocatively and they were "asking for it".

There is a lot of tensions between Muslims and the rest of society here in Australia at the moment. This guy is just making things worse with inflammatory comments like that.

You can thank that same multiculturalism for incidents like this.

Sad reality of the effects of globalization and mixing of incompatible cultures.

I don't find the cleric's remarks offensive. They are just inappropriate. If I were of his culture, I would understand that I am responsible for my own safety, my own well being. I would understand that the men of my culture hold me responsible and are not held accountable. I would only go outside of my home with my family or friends and when I go outside, I would cover.

Why? Because this would be the norm. This would be expected and acceptable behavior.

I totally agree with AJ. The cleric is of one culture but he is existing within the confines (borders?) of another. He and the men of 'his' culture should adapt accordingly. If they're not able to adapt, they should move to a region where their beliefs and culture are upheld.

Posted by igottaknow on Oct-26-2006 03:48:

i can't understand why men don't gang rape women in nudist camps/beaches. After all they're just asking for it.

France has public topless beaches why isn't France the gang rape capital of the world?

Posted by A.J. on Oct-26-2006 04:03:

You have no idea what you are talking about.

Posted by Echo of Silence on Oct-26-2006 04:05:

When the leader and the administration of the most powerful nation in the world fails to even try to comprehend the differences between belief systems and cultures, how can we fault a mere cleric?

Sure he's wrong but, good gawd, nowadays there are far bigger players who are so much more wrong and in being wrong, causing more problems and at a much greater price to the world and to mankind.

This cleric is a little man with a little voice.

Peter, nudity is 'acceptable' at nude beaches, goof.
