Vocoding: not just for vocals

I've been experimenting with using a vocoder on percussive sounds. I find that if you use a kick, hat, or clap to modulate a fairly rich carrier sound, you can come up with some pretty interesting stuff:

One

Two

Three

Four

Five

Anyone else do this?

Sounds pretty good..Which vocoder did you use to do this? I've never been able to figure out how to work a vocoder!

I used Reason's built-in vocoder. I'll probably start playing around with NI's "Vokator" soon and seeing what sort of sounds I can get out of that, too.

Nice,

Thanx for the tips

One thing I like about Reason's vocoder is that you can also use it as a 32-band EQ. You can get some interesting effects with extreme EQ settings:

Sounds like an old recording, kind of "haunted"

"Breathing" synth

haha, nice

I think everyone once tries to do sonic mayhem with vocoders and vocoding absolutely anthing with anything...nice samplies

I always wondered what's a good vocoder VST? I mean I always used reason's one...

and never thought of getting a VST:..

I'm not sure what the best Vocoder VST is. I never really looked into vocoders until recently.

there is a pretty good vocoder that comes in the Computer music magazine dvd.

these samples of you btw are very good!

thats a cool idea... Interesting for a breakdown. One of the big vocoders is NI Vokator. Getting it later this week as part of Komplete. I used a resonator (The Ableton Live one) on a drum loop on something I was screwing around with, sounded pretty cool esp. on the reverse snare hits! I think a vocoder sounds similar but with much more control over the sound right?

Megabump!

Been experimenting with this once again, and I'm finding it's really nice for getting shimmering ambient textures. This is a basic synth sound in Reason (one Subtractor) run through a vocoder and modulated by a piano passage:

It has some added spaciness due to being run through a couple of oscillating filters attached to delays. Here's how the delays sound with more staccato stuff rather than a pad:

hah! I was a very new member back then...

Live's built in vocoder is the best sounding software vocoder I have heard, and its integrated very nicely. The one that comes with CM magazine is the same as the one that comes with Fruity L, that one sounds nice too. Vokator is decent, but, I found myself fiddling around with the interface far too long to achieve any substantial results. Live's vocoder sounds nice, even with the built in carrier.

Hey guys! This sounds very good I must say. Will be experimenting with Live's vocoder. Thanks for a very good tip

The intro of a track I never finished, the first part [before the beat] is all vocoder stuff. :P I like using them as modulators, but vocoders always hog the shit out of the CPU.

I think that Vibrasphere has used the vocoder to form "their sound". It's the closest I can get to figure out how they've made some sounds. Listen to Landmark for example.
Great way to explore sounds

I remember an old track from Ryksopp i think where i had a vocoder over a drumbeat. I experimented with it but like with everything else...nothing happened.
