Angry and so it begins...

PRIME Minister John Howard says he didn't pressure the ABC to shelve popular comedy show The Glass House.

The ABC yesterday axed the weekly panel show hosted by comedian Wil Anderson, which has been accused of anti-government bias.

"I have not axed the program," Mr Howard said on Adelaide radio 5AA today.

"If it has been axed, then it has been axed by a decision of the ABC, I haven't asked that it be axed."

Mr Howard said he occasionally watched the program, which also features comedians Dave Hughes and Corrine Grant, who is involved in the ACTU's workplace rights campaign.

"I don't watch it occasionally will flick it on but not very often," Mr Howard said.

"I do not tell the ABC what programs it should run. I respect the independence of the ABC.

"From time to time, if the ABC treats a news item in an unbalanced fashion I will say so, and I will say that in relation to other programs as well."

The ABC gave no explanation for their decision not to continue the satirical program apart from telling the cast and crew yesterday that not all shows could be renewed.

Anderson posted a blog last night promising to "go out with all guns a'blazing". "It's been a really fun five years," he said.

Co-compere Hughes said axing the show made little sense.

"We have had our best ratings ever," he said.

The show was at the centre of a storm of allegations of anti-Howard Government bias and there has been speculation it is the latest casualty in the "culture wars".

It was axed just one day after Liberal NSW senator Connie Fierravanti-Wells said during a grilling of ABC executives that co-host Corrine Grant had been guilty of a serious conflict of interest because she was the public face of the ACTU's workplace relations campaign.

And it follows revelations the ABC will pay a new chief censor $280,000 a year to investigate and monitor instances of bias on ABC programs.

The show had been achieving its highest ratings since it first went to air in 2001 with average audiences of 728,000.

The program regularly outrated commercial programs in the same time slot and this year won a peak audience of almost 860,000 viewers.

Anderson, Hughes and Grant regularly make jokes about John Howard and US President George W. Bush, provoking critics to accuse them of bias.

But during a recent show Anderson responded to criticism by saying if Mark Latham had been in power they would be having a great time.

The last episode of The Glass House will go to air on November 29.

we can expect to see more programs disappearing or changing somewhat with these lovely new guidelines to ensure "impartiality" (as if such a thing ever existed) in broadcasting. now, im not saying the glass house was axed due to the new constraints on freedom of expression, but i thought id raise the issue with all of you, who really dont care.

i dont see the commercial channels having the same constraints. they're quite free to peddle their government-loving bullshit and nobody can give a damn. yet, the ABC has some of the best news programming in the country which now has to meet some arbitrary notion of "impartial". who exactly is gonna decide on something's impartiality? it should be the viewer.

or it could be that The Glass House has really sucked in the last couple of years?

I would of axed it to, and I used to watch it religiously.

Posted by tathi on Nov-01-2006 02:33:

thats fucked up, one of my favorite shows

i remember the episode where they were saying they would have a field day with Mark Latham, and they also suggested to all those Liberals whinging that they are biased that if they truly want the show to take the piss out of labor more then they should vote labor at the next election

if SBS are smart hopefully they will pick up this show,

if the ABC even think about axing Foreign Correspondant and Lateline i will be majorly fucking pissed off

Lateline last night had an interview with the secretary general of Amnesty International Irene Khan who was recently awarded a humanitarian award in Sydney, she criticised the Howard governments human rights record and its track record of trying to absolve itself from responsibility on issues like David Hicks, and Refugees....in the future will interviews like this dissapear from the ABC?

Posted by DIDI on Nov-01-2006 02:45:

^^^ That is the worst news!! I just love that show!!!!
Really good interview with Irene Kahn . "Will interviews like this vanish from the ABC?" God I hope not.

I doubt they'd get rid of those kind of shows, they've been on our tv screens for years now.

I cant believe they're getting rid of The Glass House!
pftttttttt why not get rid of shitkicker Neighbours or Big Brother.

Thats FUKT UP. I love Will Anderson.

theres your answer.

i dont think shows will be cut so much tathi, as they will be prevented or edited to attain some unknown standard of unbias. perhaps the government shouldnt fuck things up or make mistakes etc if it doesn't want to be criticised by the ABC. theres also the fact that of course the ABC (or any station) is going to be more critical of the government of the day

Posted by gumble on Nov-01-2006 03:06:

ratings dont mean shit.

they lost their wit and relied on cheap shots through dirty jokes.

boring. i get that sort of humour at work everyday.....

yeah, very true! i always hear tv executives arguing that ratings are irrelevant when judging the commercial viability of a venture

ratings dont mean shit to the credibility of a program, only to the amount of money that can made from it.

surely you agree here?

of course i agree. but surely you agree that shitty programs can continue for eons as long as the ratings are high?

Posted by Renegade on Nov-01-2006 03:37:

Personally, I agree with this. If there's one thing that no free, democratic society should tolerate it's the satirising of those in power. I mean, what would come next? Criticism? Dissent? Oh no, we couldn't have that. Not in Australia.

Posted by simon_hunter on Nov-01-2006 03:49:

I only watched it cause of dave huges and corinne because will anderson is a shit ****, its still poojabbingly gay there axing it but cause its fukin hilarious.

Posted by Philby on Nov-01-2006 07:18:

i watched a few episodes now and again, i didn't think it was that good ah well

Posted by DJ_Ballistic on Nov-01-2006 07:31:

it was ok, cant say i watched it much tho

dave hughs is hilarious, will anderson is a tossbag, he seems to think if he raises his voice during a joke, it'll make it funny

Posted by DIDI on Nov-01-2006 08:12:

I'm surprised that people are weighing up this decision as a" was it good show or bad show " issue. Even if you hated the show, The decision to watch is now out of our hands!! This is so wrong, and how easy is it they can do it now. Just when are we in Australia going to draw a line in the sand as far as our freedoms are concerned. I know this sounds extreme, but when you look at what is happening today I'm amazed that we put up with it, and just a little bit scared.

Posted by quineska on Nov-01-2006 09:14:

Somehow this decision doesn't surprise me, and its not because of the ABC's new "editorial guidelines". They seem to axe shows like this after relatively short periods of time ("Backberner", GNW, etc), whilst crap like "Rove Live" persists on the commercial networks way beyond its expiry date.

Besides, Wil Anderson is really, fucking annoying.

Posted by MiSSyM on Nov-01-2006 11:40:

OI YOU WILL ANDERSON HATER'S ARE JUST JEALOUS OF HIM.......

LALALALALLALALA

OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

HE MADE THAT SHOW!

HAHA Rove isnt as good as it used to be but still sometimes funny, Pete Hellier is the funniest!

Posted by Fledz on Nov-02-2006 08:44:

Oh that's crap. It was a pretty entertaining show

one of my cousins spent new years eve 1999/2000 sitting at ayres rock, watching the sun rise, and getting absolutely cained with peter hellier - he reckons he came close to death from laughing so much.

as for the glasshouse - i watched it for the first time in a while last night - not bad i guess...not that interested in much on tv these days tho

Posted by quineska on Nov-02-2006 08:54:

Don't get me wrong, I loved the glasshouse. Always regret missing it on a Wednesday/Friday/Saturday night (whenever it was on, ABC kept changing ti).

I think its pretty lame though they said "oh but we're not axing the Chaser" to justify getting rid of the Glasshouse. Anyone actually know the "official" reason (apart from John Howard conspiracy theories)?

They reckon they have some new stuff in the works though (like from the guy that did "We can be heroes")...but that doesn't mean they should axe the glasshouse.

i was tired and cranky when i replied beforehand.

so i dont like the glasshouse anymore.

BUT, if it is true that the ABC censored it, that sucks. To what extent the ABC does bow to political stand points, im not sure. Theoretically it is a independant organisation.

Maybe it got axed on moral grounds? (probably not, but they did touch on some senstive subjects now and then?)

Posted by Sid on Nov-02-2006 13:04:

Will Anderson rocks!

Anyone who has seen him do stand up in Glebe at The Friend in Hand will also agree (Jace, Simon00 and Blaise). The guy is shameless on stage. Rips into anything and anyone with great effect.
