How do you guys expose yourself to new music?
If there is one thing I have learned during my short time here, it's that a good DJ keeps his sets fresh with new music. I've come across a lot of songs that I don't recognize and I feel like I should, so I was wondering how you become familiar with so many tracks and mixes?
Right now I listen to Trance Around the World and A State of Trance every week but I'd like to know some more sources to hear more music.
friends usually help me alot with tracks... which is good... but also a little searching doesnt hurt. go through beatport/djdowloads/wtvr else and check out their new tracks, ur bound to find some hot fire.
also a run to ur local record shop doesnt hurt.. today i went there and found a couple of songs that i enjoyed that i dont think i would of found on download sites.
as for mixes, they are found all over the internet mate.
Basically, what I listen to throughout the week...
- Soma.FM (Groove Salad, and occasionally the Drone Zone), Proton Radio and Bass Drive
- Browse most of the new releases of the day on Beatport in the Minimal, Prog & Tech House sections, once or twice a week I'll browse Techno, Electronica and DJ Tools
- Digweed's Kiss 100 sets (although lately he's been picking up tunes that I've had since April)
- Other various tunes/sets that seem to be "all the rage" or that get recommended to me
Yeah... Pretty much it.

I listen to Dance Department every week. But aside from that... I just log into the server and get whatever has an appealing name or whatever has a high ranking. That's how I get the shit in advanced. It's a private server. Then I also browse all the genres at Beatport.

I stopped bothering 2 years ago. It just started to feel like a huge waste of time.
Now I just browse online stores randomly.
Just keep listening to music all day
browse the download stores and see what you like
I listen to about 30 new songs everyday.
I end up getting 1 or 2 maybe, others I just trash them.
If you want to be a good DJ, you can not keep listening to new songs only from Radio Shows, you are just not going anywhere.
You have to be original, and that takes a lot of time looking for the music.
Of course you can listen some cool songs on radio shows and get them, but that cannot be your main source.
Good Luck =)
Just keep my ears and eyes open, listen to tracks on Beatport and check out what my fave dj's are playing.
How about exposing yourself to OLD music?
I downloaded masses of sets over the last couple of years through the torrents & not really listened to all of them before so I sneaked them in to work (gotta love flash drives
) & listen to them throughout the day. Sure beats putting up with crap local commercial radio stations I usually have to suffer
& I've picked up plenty of cracking tracks I'd otherwise have missed
Bonus feature: because they're not brand spangly new promos most of them have now been released & are cheaper to buy

Here is how I try to keep up:
1)Electronic music stations on I-Tunes.
2)Download Music Sites (New Releases)
3)Satilite Radio
4)Buying New Mixes From Top Djs (You can learn alot about producers that you never heard of this way and follow them)
5)Downloading Mixes From The DJ Promotion Forum
6)And Just Doing Research On Electronic Music Related Sites And Record Label Sites. Always Check Out The Links On These Record Label Sites Because They Could Lead You To That Killer Tune That Will Put A Tear In Your Eye.

pick an artist. check his latest releases. check who remixed it. check their releases. check the labels these are on. check their releases. look at the bio's for the artists. see what groups their in, collabs they work on, labels they own... and check their releases.
browse beatport new releases and by artists/genres/labels i like.
try to stop by the record stores as much as i can, but never as easy (or cost effective as id like)

FTP is where it's at
i get sent tracks and promos, i rarely do much shopping
it's more weeding out than shopping
otherwise i like to take a stroll down to my local record store and spend an afternoon digging
then there's the usual digital download suspects
just keep checking new releases and upcoming releases, it might sound lame but i've always thought you don't find music, music finds you...
now where did i put that joint?
Keep watching for new releases from your favorite labels.
a weekly visit to the vinyl shop once in a while is good. the guys will pull me whitelabels and test presses cuz most of the big stuff they know i get online. I always browse the new releases on beatport. and SETS!!!! lots and lots of sets. I download everything i can from other DJs that i like. i listen to what they are playing and i'll usually find good tracks that way.

Download sets from reputable DJ's. Let them do the work for me. Find track lists. Finding the track is the harest part.
