Recommendation for a sound card

I dont want something utterly expensive. I have an integrated sound card and i just got cubase sx 3. Cubase wont work good with the current setup.

Im looking at a decent sound card in the $0-100-150 range.
What are your recommendations?

are you going to work with external gear? or is it for vst only use? please give us some more info about your needs.

E-MU 0404 or M-Audio Audiophile 2496
Both are good and inexpensive cards.

u bet bro..
I m thinking of buying an Audiophile 2496 too..
it has an input for a midi controller too apart from most usual features.
anyone can tell me of its disadvantages, if any ?
Like u cannot add any hardware..?

Both E-MU 0404 and Audiophile 2496 only have one analog stereo input and one analog stereo output. So, they're very basic cards.
The E-MU has a DSP built in on the card. The effects are pretty good actually. I'm not using the DSP though since I use Reason. It can also record in 24/192. Which is pretty pointless if you ask me, 24/96 is more than enough.

I don't need a lot of inputs since I have an external mixer, I'm very happy of the audiophile.
If you have some free pci-slots you can add another card in the same system, working flawlessly together.

I will be using VST's. Maybe in the future i would have some extra components, but not now.

You can get an E-Mu 1212M for $150 just about everyplace these days.

emu's 1212m will be the good choice if u can get it in 150$. it's ad/da converters are much better than the 0404.

m-audio audiophile 192 ftw!!

Posted by funkysouls on Nov-03-2006 09:16:

so its like...
I have a Beyer DT250 headphones and i m planning for a midi controller (EMU X 49 maybe) too.
Can i plug both of them (headphones + Midi cont) in to a 2496 together?

ok, i just figured out i can, using an RCA converter

Audiophile 2496, can be had these days for peanuts with the new 192 out.

E-MU 1212M is the best sub 150 soundcard, no contest. The only downside to it is that you need 2 PCI slots to get all the connectivity, which can be a bummer if you don't have 2 spare. Or if you use a Small Form Factor PC and only have 1 PCI slot.

Its totally balanced. Synchronised digital outs that is switchable to AES/EBU. Pro Tools 192 convertors. Its the budget soundcard daddy. Not sure what the drivers are like these days because they used to suck but I hear they have gotten much better recently.
