Two Palestinian women were killed by Israeli fire on Friday after hundreds of women answered a call for human shields to protect gunmen holed up in a Gaza mosque, news agencies reported.

The women's presence outside the mosque allowed the gunmen to escape, ending a 19-hour standoff with Israeli soldiers in tanks and armoured personnel carriers.

Two women were killed and at least 10 were wounded, while at least two gunmen fled in the guise of veiled women in the town of Beit Hanoun.

"What is happening is a plan to destroy the Palestinian people," said Hamas Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh.

The Israeli army said troops spotted militants hiding among the women and opened fire.

Israeli government spokesman Mark Regev said there would be an investigation.

"The standing orders of the Israeli army are clearly, you do not target innocent civilians," said Regev.

Regev added there were reports that gunfire had come from the crowd outside the mosque.

Israeli forces had seized Beit Hanoun on Wednesday in a bid to stop militants from firing crude rockets at nearby Israeli towns.

In all, 35 Palestinians have been killed in Gaza since Wednesday, including 17 on Friday.

The incursion is the biggest in some time and the fighting has been fierce, the CBC's Peter Armstrong reported from Jerusalem.

The mosque became the focus of the fighting when the gunmen most thought to be from the military wing of Hamas took refuge there Thursday. Israeli troops surrounded the building and an exchange of fire began.
Mosque ceiling collapses

Pressing the gunmen to surrender, soldiers threw stun and smoke grenades and knocked down an outer wall of the mosque with a bulldozer, causing the ceiling to collapse.

By mid-morning Friday, a large group of veiled women had gathered outside the mosque. The Israeli army said the gunmen were able to escape because there weren't enough soldiers to block the women from approaching the building and troops didn't want to shoot into the crowd.

The army said it targeted Beit Hanoun as a major staging ground for rocket attacks. However, the militants have continued to fire rockets, including two that landed in southern Israel on Friday, slightly wounding two people.

Among those killed Friday were the two women protesters, a 16-year-old boy, two medics and at least 10 militants, the Associated Press reported. Most of the deaths Friday were a result of a series of Israeli air strikes after sundown. In the deadliest incident, five Palestinians were killed in an Israeli strike in the Jebaliya refugee camp.

Hamas said in a statement Friday they would respond to the attacks "blood for blood."

It's funny how there's another thread with exactly the same story viewed from a different angle. So different that you thought it was a different story . Just remarking on the fact.

That's a logical implication of having pro-Israeli media.

those damn children trying to get hit by israeli snipers to play the Western outrage fiddle...ohh well the 12 year old girl would have mothered terrorists anyway, good thing they killed her

quote:
Israeli snipers killed two Palestinians in Gaza on Saturday, one of them a 12-year-old girl, Palestinian sources said.

Six others, including at least four fighters, were killed in air strikes and clashes.

Israeli soldiers briefly eased their grip on the northern town of Beit Hanoun, but as darkness fell soldiers began house-to-house searches, local residents said.

The violence followed one of Gaza's bloodiest days in months, when 19 people were killed as Israel continued an operation it says is aimed at stopping rocket fire by Palestinian fighters.

The 12-year-old girl was killed by a single bullet to the head, local hospital workers said.

An Israeli army spokesman said a sniper had spotted an armed fighter and had fired at him but that the girl was killed as the armed man got out of the line of fire.

Another man, said to be a 38-year-old civilian was also shot dead by sniper fire, local residents said.

One fighter was killed in battles with Israeli soldiers backed by tanks near Beit Hanoun, home to some 30,000 Palestinians, witnesses said.

'Massacre'

Mahmoud Abbas, the Palestinian president, who has described the operation as a "massacre," called on the UN Security Council to convene to discuss the issue, his spokesman said.

Abbas "sent a message to the head of the Security Council asking him to convene immediately to discuss the tragic situation in Gaza because of Israeli aggression, which has killed 42 Palestinians so far," Nabil Abu Rudeina said.

The violence has put back any resumption of peace talks between Israel and the Palestinians.

Among the dead on Saturday were two Hamas fighters, killed in a missile strike near the Jabalya refugee camp, medical officials said. A 16-year-old boy was also killed in the strike.

Earlier a local Hamas commander was killed in an air raid in Gaza City that wounded four other fighters, medics said.

Some 14 Palestinians were also wounded in various strikes and clashes, hospital officials added.

An 18-year-old civilian wounded by Israeli gunfire earlier on Saturday, later died in hospital, medical workers said.

Three men wounded in the fighting since the offensive, named "Operation Autumn Clouds", began on Wednesday also died of their wounds, hospital workers said.

Israeli forces have killed 45 people in the four-day assault, the Palestinian health ministry said.

well thats just childish if that truly is the implication.

if that is the case how does that logic explain European media, which is conversly devoid of any pro-Israeli propaganda.

Posted by shaolin_Z on Nov-05-2006 04:52:

^^^ It certainly is. What's even more disgusting is how (the State of) Israel used it's attrocities in Lebanon and on the media focus on it as a distraction for furthering their agenda in the occupied territories (West Bank), which naturally entails an escalation of attrocities in the occupied territories.

Plain and simple; Europe is not America. The US is the one with a unique relationship with the state of Israel with utter disregard for moral and ethical concerns. The US gives unilateral support to Israel, not Europe. It doesn't really matter a whole lot what people in Europe think. In the US that's certainly not the case, and that relationship between the US and Israel can't be maintained without supressing the truth about the reality of the situation here and rationlizing it with propaganda.

thats great. and your right, that is pretty simple. unfortunately, it's never that simple.

we do support Israel. many countries do. without that support Israel would have either been extinguished or survived only as a shell of the original country mandated by the United Nations. we support Israel. however, we do so recognizing Israel's right to exist above all other rationale of her enemies. her enemies being on the battlefield not the ones in Europe writing newspapers. the American government does actually make that distinction you know?

in doing so do we automatically abandon all moral and ethical concerns in the defence of a soveriegn, peace loving nation at the expence of our own security? no. of course it doesn't. if we were talking about something more than just propaganda then lets dicuss it.

given what Europe is dealing with right now, the assimilation and immigration problems, i do believe it matters what Europeans think. as a matter of fact i believe it is symptomatic of exactly the propaganda we're discussing. maybe not completely, but it sure isn't as simple as you suggest.

so if, in America, the logical implication of anti-Israeli propaganda is more propaganda and it's so simple then what makes you think your version of the propaganda has the absolute moral authority to question Israel's right to exist insofar as to spread ideas of her demise? is it because she counters with the same asymetrical warfare techniques used to bring her down?

That's a screwed question anyways.

A more interesting one would be to name ones that don't.

but I can probably guess that it would be the ones surrounding them.
