Love him or hate him
I just downloaded a new oakenfold set from djmixes2k and I must say I was surprised. Definitely wasn't what I was expecting. I am not trying to start another debate her really, but I just wanted to make a comment.
To me the set seemed to carry a good number of breaks. I've read in a number of places that breaks could be the next new sound and are ready to explode. I know many people have their beef with oakenfold (and deservedly so) but you have to admit he's always been an innovator and a leader in the dance community. Is this a sign of things to come. Are breaks making a break?
Paul Oakenfold will always have a place in my music history because of his 1999 essential mix world tour. I personally don't like him now but the man will always be a legend in my book.

Breaks do seem have more impact on music. The 2nd bedrock release by dj hyper was entirely breaks.

I agree.. people move on. He definitely wouldnt be the #1 dj in the world if he still played 99.
But has anyone else heard any breaks in any other sets lately.. I'm really cusious
dude there is like 3 other threads on this...stick to one of them ok?
Oakenfold is still my fav DJ because of his old 99 and before stuff.
He was really the first trance DJ I really liked (his old stuff) and I still get his older stuff because most of it is better than most of the newer stuff!
I havent bothered with any of his new stuff like the Ibiza CD or any new mixes. But I got Southern Sun!!

His old stuff blows me away! And he will always be my #1 for that! But no matter if you hate him or love him you have to admit he has down shitloads for the dance industry. And surely you will respect him for that!
Breaks are definitely making their impact into Trance (I expect that by 2004 it'll almost be 50-50 between breaks and 4 beat)
I personally luv em, but it pisses me a bit that most artist have to do breakbeats in a few of their tracks just to show they're cool and they know how.
1998 and 1999 has been a very good year for oakenfold. Unfortunatley For him he is trying to gain somekind of new style into his music , and fans of oakie are finding it hard to like his new styles as they are to familiar with his old styles .
My mate went to see him on friday at GodsKitchen, he played little or no breaks, his mixing was spot on, track selection was very good
his last 6 tracks were..
"amoeba assassin - Piledriver!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
oakie - southern sun
ppk - resureection (unknown new mix thats meant to be incredible)
cj bolland the prophet
mauro picotto lizard
M-Diva - Reachin out"
Don't sound bad to me

Oakie getting back to trance is definately a good thing, the energy he had in his old sets was amazing, and the tricks he pulled whilst mixing lizard were out of this world according to my mate jon, we can expect good things from him this year
I remember the first time I saw Oakie live was back in 2000 at Homelands. What can I say absolutely amazing, I used to love his style of trance. the whole setup for those two hours left me gasping all the lights lasers and sound system. I remember recording each one of his world tours and listening to them on the bus on the way to college. I thought theey were pretty good. But since then for me he has gone pretty downhill. Playing to much commmercial vocal cheese, gone are the days when oaki used to set the trends and play choonz b4 anybody else played them. But then this was in the months leading up to the whole commercialisation of trance music before every tom dick and harry knew what trance was. More to the point Oaki has started to go more commercial, i was not one bit impressed when I watched him live at the NEC last October. i hope he moves back to his old more successful self. Enough of my waffling I am off!
I'm seeing The Chemical Bro feat. Oakenfold & Sasha & Digweed April 20th. I'll tell ya how it goes.
ok ok...ive commented on this from last years big oakey thread...even though you guys think he's played out and all, the man is a fuckin genius in terms of his musical selection. he's been behind several different music movements of the late 80's and early 90's. he's got a production list a mile long, a shweet ass record label w/ ma ho bag jan johnson signed....and he kicks ass in person. i think he's still one of the best dj's in the world...
check yaself b4 u wreck yaself

I especially like the 2 years @ cream cds. Download it or buy it.
I hardly hear of people talk about his "perfecto presents another world" 2 disc releases back one or two years ago. The build up in energy to timo mass - ubik is fantastic. The first couple of tracks have an interesting bass to it that feels kinda unique.
