Question Do you believe in Fate?

or do you believe you're in control of your own destiny?

acknowledging fate indicates a belief in something above yourself, a god or deity(s) if you will.

i do not believe our lives have a pre-game plan put forward for us at birth but rather that we are in control of our own destiny.

maybe it is a little bit of both.

your thoughts.

I believe in fate.

When you were conceived, you were fated to be born a male or female. When you spend all the money you have in the bank, you are fated to be broke. We are all fated to die one day.

fate
1. something that unavoidably befalls a person.

I believe this.

I think you really want to know, "do you believe in destiny"? Most people seem to confuse, or equate destiny and fate. Destiny is a little different.

des‧ti‧ny

2. the predetermined, usually inevitable or irresistible, course of events.

Destiny I believe in, but in a very convoluted manner. I would explain but I can't be bothered to at the moment.

well, i believe that everything happens for a reason.. and that reason is usually to prevent me from being successful in anything i do

Nope.

Regardless of whether or not I believe in determinism, I do feel that we can never possibly know the answer to the question you posed, and will therefore live in blissful ignorance of whether or not my free will is actually free, or a mere illusion masking what amount to nothing more than an insignificantly small part of the great cosmic swerve!

And for some reason I can't understand, this feels appropriate for this thread:

quote:
A man said to the Universe: "Sir, I exist!"

"However," replied the Universe, "the fact has not created in me a sense of obligation.

pretty much what she said... but I don't think it is that easy to explain it... at least for me.

I believe in that.

That, what ever you do next, leads you in another path to another universe.

Just read Beowulf or something eFeKz?

i believe in destiny to some extent. i think that things are meant to happen so we can learn specific lessons in life. how we deal with them is up to us, but i think major events happen for some higher purpose, even if it is innate.

I believe in Fate!

To those of you who believe in fate: What evidence do you have to support your claim?

That's a pretty piss poor way to defend your position.

"Free will" comes to mind.

I'm not trying to prove anything, just reminding people they can't either.

if you're REALLY into it and feel like reading... then:

http://www.pointlesswasteoftime.com/horror.html

technically, as far as my knowledge of physics goes, that is true. however, it is not something anyone can ever really come to accept.

Posted by Absolut_Vodka on Nov-06-2006 23:34:

well so what if fates exist, as long as you don't know what it holds, it should not matter one bit cuz how will you ever know what is and what is not fate. Afterall if fate did exist it would only exist in the form of guiding the choices you make and the opportunities you take (or don't take) in life and that in essence is controlled only by yourself.

Personally, I always crack up at the people who feel that its their fate to never succeed but always suffer. It's this frame of mind that will exacly prevent them from ever thriving that extra mile to achieve success or happiness in life.

Posted by jdat on Nov-06-2006 23:37:

If fate exists I want to have a face to face conversation with "it" so I can stab it in the face!

Son of filthy bastards

Thanks for fuckin it all up for me thanks a lot!

LOL! Read that in my metaphysics class this semester, almost universally panned as "faux intellectual rubbish."

A lack of evidence doesnt validate any presented notion or idea.

Its like saying, "if you cant prove there is no God, therefore he must exist".
