Unhappy

I've been listening to trance for about three years now.. I've stopped listening to everything else and now trance is all I listen to. Well anywayz, I hear friends that dont understand trance make stereotypes about the music. Here's some of the stuff I have heard...

1.Why do you like trance, isnt it the same song over and over?
2.Trance all sounds the same.
3.Only ******s listen to trance.
4.Isnt trance only for white people?
5.Trance is only for those weird ass people on drugs...

Yea I know, some funny shit huh? Well we all have heard this kind of stuff from friends. Whats some of the stuff you've heard?

Posted by djfred on Mar-08-2001 05:11:

i've only had two comments made to me.

one was from this guy that obviously has no idea what the whole scene is about, but i told him that i listen to trance, and then he was all like "yeah, but don't you like have to be high to listen to that stuff"... i was like whatever.. didn't even answer him..

the second... my buddy says that trance is gay, but then again, about 90% of things to him are gay...

most of my friends don't mind it, but they'd rather listen to somethin else.

Smile i get it all the time!

being a part time taxi driver i get comments all the time...coz i make all the customers listen too all the latest trance tracks(promoting in i)...comments i've had e.g 'is that, that garage music?'wtf 'do you have too take a xtc pill too listen too that shit' 'it all sounds the same' 'don't that give you a headache' 'is that cd scratched' . However alot of people do give positive feedback until i tell them its trance hahaha...there like 'oh is it'! (haha that fucks erm!)

Yeah i also got critics on trance, mostly that was at school, those who listened to it were in minority of number, and at lunchtime we got the possibilty to put on some music in the last grade, and we often claimed that stereo to pu ton our cd's,we always got the same critics over and over again"that shity music is always the same","that music is booooring","tha music isn't music","take away the computer and you have got nothing","those song can't be brought live",blablablabla,
but they always made one big mistake "that music is as commercial as Mc donalds",that really pissed us of,but we had our reply,"why would it be commercial? If you count the number of people here in the room that listen to trance, and than you count those who listen to hard rock and hip hop, where does that gets you?",the discussion ended there most of the time

Thumbs up

This is a good thread..My friends say also that trance sounds the same. You know what, fuck all of you trance haters out there...I am kind of glad that i am the only one who listens to trance..I am sort of an outcast, i like it...

Drunk

once my sister told my mum that i was listening to music that makes u take drugs hahahaha that was ages ago when i was really young. It wasnt trance but jungle but u know what i mean.
Also a lot people think that what I listen 2 know is gabber. I like listening 2 HH and techno aswell. They think its all boring and its all the same.
It is not gabber. In the years of gabber i was fully against it. I hate gabber. So I get really pissed off when they say that Im listening to gabber. Wankers!!!!!!!!
But usually thesse people only here a sample of a song and dont bother 2 hear all of it. Then u cant understand trance esspecially if u dont know trance in the first place.

Angry

Yeah, that really pisses me of too man!!!!!!
I'm more into the harder sounds: techno/techtrance/hardtrance.... but when I listen some and my friends hear the music they will qualify it as Gabber or as Hardcore! That is soo disrespecting!!! I can't stand it!!! Well, I could tell them that to be qualified as Hardcore you need a 180 bpm or more... and the stuff I listen to never gets much higher than 140 bpm.... but they wont understand...

Later!

Posted by Nastra Azzurro on Mar-09-2001 12:49:

Yeah dude my point exactly
I think Ill take some gabber along next time and let them hear the difference of 180 and 140 bpms

ciao

Posted by maniac.dg on Mar-09-2001 13:01:

haha, some lol!!! Gabber is the worst shit I have ever heard... No wonder that the people who listen to it need drugs...
I would need drugs, too, if I had to listen more than 5 minutes to that...
Nothing is worse than getting told that you are listening to Gabber when it is obvious that it is trance!!

I listen to trance at work a lot. The comments I have heard:

1. "You are listening to that same song AGAIN" (my playlist has about 1500 tunes so hardly :P)

2. "Isn't that too repetitive?"

3. "What's that noise? Don't you get a headache?"

4. "People dance stupidly in raves"

5. "Do you do E/gamma/cocaine/speed/whatever shit?"

Haha. The girl who fixes my hair is very interested in the rave scene and we always chat about parties, music etc. but she has never been in a real rave party (I intend to take her with me some time). Anyway, she was surprised when I explained that there are several genres of electronica and also melodic/uplifting trance. She thought it was all that banging hardhouse stuff. In other words, most people have VERY limited idea about the music style.

Quite often clueless people assume that trance is plainly instrumental and there are no vocals or lyrics involved. They also associate commercial shit like ATB, Darude, Alice Deejay etc. hopeless crap to real trance which they have no clue about. For most people the word techno covers all genres of electronica and it's quite a job to explain that 2Unlimited has nothing to do with trance =)

On the positive side I have to say that most people are interested in knowing what this is all about if you market the music to them in the right way Like I said before, I get a good feeling if I manage to get someone new hooked into trance (hehehe, flashbacks of my dealer history.. NOT!) since I enjoy it so much that I suspect that the newcomers get similiar kicks in time. A big "fuck you" goes to people who automatically judge others by their taste and refuse to find out what it's about. I'm not the world's biggest jazz-fan for example but I don't start spewing crap at anyone who is.

PLUR - live by it and make the world a better place

Everyone says ....

TRANCE IS CHEESY!

1. not intelligent, not quality muzik
2. obvious....drum rolls & build ups every 5 sec
3. repetitive
4. simple, basic

The trance haters are mostly prog house Nu Breed (Danny Howells, Digweed, Pappa, Steve Lawler) Lovers.

I'm constantly defending trance, Pvd, Tiesto etc.

Posted by Denser on Mar-10-2001 04:56:

i couldnt agree with mindbender and twilogoddess more.

almost everything has already been said...i jus have this to say about all trance lovers - "no one is more open minded than a trance fan".we dont complain about other music genres.

Posted by whiskers on Oct-26-2001 22:45:

i have a friend who listens only to hard rock, so i made him listen to some trance tunes (delerium's silence, oh yeah!). he did get interested in cheesy tunes (hey, i like cheesy tunes too!). sometimes he burns cdrws to listen to in school and tells me "hey, i burned another cd with that trance/shit/crap on it" and i always hit him at that point and say "hard rock is crap, it's not even real music. don't call trance crap"

once a guy asked me what i was listening to and i said trance, and he was like "how can you listen to dance music???" . he was one of those weird punk rockers, so no wonder

i was in a local music store trying to find anything worthy when this old woman rushed in, went through different trance cd's like a hurricane and started throwing names at the clerk "george acosta, digweed, atb, ministry of sound, etc." that was pretty funny, but what killed me at the end was her phrase "yeah, you know, i'm interested in that techno stuff"

some people just have bad ear: they can't hear the beat, so from their birth on they listen to screaming with noise in the background (i'll try to find an example: if i'm not mistaken, limp bizkit?). that's why they say "isn't that repetitive?" fools

Posted by RnakR on Oct-26-2001 23:12:

i hate those who are against trance because it's done by computer !
like if it was the computer doing the work...
i think it's harder to make a great trance track than a rock one !
Computers can calculate faster than humans
computer helps us for full of things...
so producer use computers to get the best of the sound , and the best of sound makes trance....
personally i really can't understand people who hate trance...
so beautiful , so great , you know when you hear the beat coming on airwaves and you get a smile and you can't catch the guys besides you don't get it and tells "so?!"
OK GO LISTEN TO THAT MC MASTER P YO ****** ...
when i used to argue against rap vs trance the guy has for conclusion look at this " ok maybe rap isnt so good music but we listen it for the style " or "hey does guy gets full of chicks , look their videos!" yeah for the style !
a trance lover can have a new track that makes his day , just souvenir de chine made me happy for a week !
i dont know if we can call us lucky but trance gives us so much hapiness and fun than all those style together !
i hope i'll be 80yr old ans still loving it !

Posted by TeKnoHe@d2025 on Oct-26-2001 23:25:

"That's not even real music...it's created on a computer" A couple people I've talked to have told me that...

Posted by ant1832 on Oct-26-2001 23:38:

"It doesn't even have words...how can you listen to something w/out words."
The most popular has to be
"they all sound the same"
I hate people that say that

Posted by indianamike on Oct-26-2001 23:40:

And everyone says...

1) That it's only good to listen to when you're at a dance or club.

Bullshit! Guess what? I'm 16, never been to a club, a rave, or trance convention in my entire life. I wish I could, though!

2) That's not real music.

These days, what is? Music is changing, and so are its instruments. Didn't people say the same thing about the electric guitar? Something that makes trance so unique is its complex drumlines and synths, and taht is truly original.

Posted by ak303 on Oct-26-2001 23:41:

Yea that computer/not real music thing i get a lot. But the most stupid comment is "Has no emotion or no feeling..." this is usually a comment by tossers who need words to explain everything (and even then they don't get it.)

There's only one other person in my 6th form who's really into trance *specifically, as opposed to drum and bass or techno or whatever* it's kind of nice i admit.

Some one commented it's not like classical music, we won't listen to it in 100 years time... maybe not exactly as it is now but i think it'll be around.

Overall i only have one friend whos really into trance and he's 2 years older than me.

btw I like Digweed and all that proggie stuff, just once in a while. That is so true Trance ppl are open to other music.. i got something from near any genre that i like.

Smile Tongue

hehe...I was getting this way back in the mid-late 80s in the New Wave days. Depheche Mode, New Order, Flock of Seagulls, Pet Shop Boys to name a few, and yes...I got the same comments then....go figure...
I guess thats why I love trance so much.
I think a lot of it has to do with people's willingness to even understand what it is they're listening to.
They have no history of anything else to compare it to. You know a person's disposition by what comes out of their mouths most of the time; "Don't you get a headache listening to that stuff?", "When does this song stop?" and "It all sounds the same" are people (IMHO) that don't want to learn about it, so I ignore them because I'd probably be wasting my breath trying to defend something they really have no concept about.
I have such a huge leg up on these people as far as 'where this sample came from' or 'I remember the original song and this is a remix'. To them (and maybe to some of you) a lot of songs I recognize as being a re-released, remix or a huge sample. I can actually enjoy what the DJ/Producer is tabling to my ear because I understand and truely enjoy it!
I've loved 'Electronia' music even before that become a coined term and there's no sign that I'll ever give that up!
Being totally surrounded in an audio exlir of an uplifting trance song where my private world comes to life is my ultimate high!
To me there is no equal....
Peace...

Hello!

Well this thread was started a long time ago, the good part is its a damn good one, so glad to talk about it again...here is my list...
======================================================================
"Has the song ended yet?"
"So when does the next one start?"
"This mix is 78 minutes long? How can you listen to that for so long?"
"This has vulgar language*"
"So you listen to this TECK-NO crap?"
"Isn't it all the same?"
"What exctly did Tisto do up there on stage when you saw him?"
"Whats the difference with TECH-NO and Trance?"
"Arn't raves just for drug addicts that have nothing better to do?"
"How can you listen to that stuff durring the day?"
"So do you have any Serena Paris?"
"All this music is, is BOOM BOOM BOOM"

*at school. 2nd day, there was one song plastikE and I were listing to full blast that said "they know what is what, but they dont know what is up, they just strut....what the fuck?" and the teacher on PL (Parking Lot) duty, said you can't listen to this stuff its to vulgar....so plastikE said non discreetly, "Sorry I'll remember to bring my Nelly Cd tomorrow." hehe well there you go enjoi the list.....

Posted by Trancewave on Oct-27-2001 02:46:

About 2 years ago, I just got my grubby hands on this new track that's been blowing my mind for weeks....it was

Azzido Da Bass - Doomsnight (THE ABSOLUTE [GREATESTTRACK OF ALLLLLLLLL TIME, I DON'T GIVE A SHIT WHAT ANYONE THINKS!!!!!! )

This tune was just awesome. The first time I heard it, it made the hair on the back of my neck stood up like never before

Anyways I brought it to work all excited to share with some of my buddies there (they only listen to hip hop). When they heard it, I got comments like

"what is this crap?"
"sounds like some someone whiping a shovel around like a fag"
"WTF is this, this is horrible"
"what drugs are you on to be listening to shit like this"

They normally can't stand the stuff i normally hear but Doomsnight was at the bottom of the barrel when it came to music.

Then a few weeks and months after, Doomsnight made it all the way up the charts and was #1 everywhere and all the clubs started playing it. Those same people said hey I've heard that before and then decided to listen to it again but this time they liked it!! WTF!!!!
I had to endure all those insults only to have them liking it once the clubs and radio play it to death and became commercial? Now the same people STILL listen to Sandstorm and nothing else and think that that's all there is to trance and electronica music.
