Ok, so I screwed up my laptop

I spilled coffee on the keyboard and it doesn't work. I don't have accidental warranty so i have to pay for whatever it takes to fix the wretched thing. I took the laptop to the school PC repair center and they said they charge $ 55 / hour labor charges + whatever it takes to replace/fix the hardware. So I didn't give them my laptop.

I contacted DELL and they gave me instructions on how to open up the keyboard and clean it. But I've never opened my Laptop before. Otherwise, they said I need to buy a new keyboard.

So, I gotta do it all by myself. Has anyone opened the laptop keyboard before ? Does anyone have an idea how much it costs to get a new one ? Can I buy it off Ebay ?

D-res might be able to give you some advice.

Just take off the keypad (Must open up your laptop) and clean everything, it should start working after that.

that seems to be a better option, considering that the keyboard DELL suggested (XG900) costs more than a 100 bucks.

FFS - taking off a Dell keyboard is a piece of cake.

Don't put water anywhere near it - ignore whoever said that.

I've taken Dell laptops apart many times, some of them require the keyboard to be removed to upgrade the RAM - so you can tell how easy it's supposed to be.

You might have to replace the keyboard if you totally fucked it, but you'll love that machine all the more when it's working again and you were the one who fixed it - trust me.

My laptop has taken a complete dump. I spilled white wine on the keyboard a few days ago, and now it locks up on start........wuggh.... Might be time to get a new one.

I went there a few weeks ago to buy fabric for a scarf. Luckely I had the girl give me twive as much fabric as I needed, because the girl cut it with a variation of 7 inches on the width. Total Half ass work. Then the woman next to the girl is being impolite and condesending because I had to go to the store when I was sick. The service there sucks, even for walmart.

It's not a laptop anymore hehe.

Ok, so I removed the keyboard and dismantled it completely, taking out all the keys and the plastic snaps underneath them. I cleaned everything with distilled water, wipes and cotton swabs. Took me 5 hours to do it. Assembled the keyboard again and let it dry overnight. In the morning I turned the computer on. Most of the keys were working, but not all. I also broke a couple of plastic snaps while putting them back so I wasted 2 keys.

But I could access the computer. Fortunately the coffee spill did not seep into the the rest of the hardware, so my computer is working and there is no data loss. I was sooooo worried about it. All my data in there + no backup.

Thinking this is gona cost me well over $ 120, I called up DELL and placed an order for a new keyboard.

Price? - $ 20.03 with shipping and tax I was so happy.

My new keyboard is on the way, and next week I should be able to use my laptop again

Lesson learnt. Coffee and Laptop do not mix
