Sadly, People in Ontario ARE that stupid

OTTAWA (CBC) - Ontarians have not forgotten Bob Rae's rocky time as their NDP premier, but he's the Liberal leadership candidate most likely to make them vote for the party, a CBC study suggests.
PUBLICIT

Of the 600 Ontarians surveyed by Environics Research Group, 26 per cent said they would be more likely to vote Liberal if Rae is chosen to head the federal Liberal party.

That was the strongest support in Ontario of the four main federal Liberal leadership candidates the survey focused on. The Liberal party selects a new leader on Dec. 3. Support inside the Greater Toronto Area was even stronger for Rae than across the province, according to the research group.

"The city of Toronto has really swung to the left over the last generation or so to the point where the Liberals and the NDP have such a stranglehold in Toronto," said Derek Leebosh, senior associate of public affairs at Environics.

However, nearly an equal number of those polled in Ontario, 24 per cent, said that if Rae was on the ballot for the Liberals they would be less likely to vote for the party.

Gerard Kennedy, who resigned as education minister in the Ontario Liberal government to run for the federal leadership, had the second-strongest support from those polled in the province, with 13 per cent more likely to vote Liberal if he headed the party.

Twelve per cent of Ontarians would support Liberals with Michael Ignatieff at the helm, while Stphane Dion trailed behind with 10 per cent.

Poll results from across the country paint a different picture, with Rae garnering the most support, followed by Ignatieff, Dion, and Kennedy.

Across the country, 17 per cent of those surveyed said they were more likely to vote Liberal if Rae leads the party and 20 per cent said it was less likely.

The Ontario results of the survey came as good news for Rae supporters, including Ontario Finance Minister Greg Sorbara, who said it confirmed what he's thought all along.

"People distinguish between Bob's leadership abilities and who he was as a politician and a statesman, and his party, which was clearly rejected in the 1995 election," said Sorbara.

Critics have often called Rae's conversion from the NDP to Liberal party and his legacy as Ontario's premier as the biggest weaknesses of his bid for federal Liberal leadership.

Rae held office from 1990 to 1995, a time marked by the worst economic downturn since the Depression. Some still harbour bad memories of the record deficits and high unemployment that plagued Rae's time as premier.

The poll was conducted between Nov. 2-6. The results are accurate to within four percentage points, 19 times out of 20.

You're not going anywhere.

I really don't share your view of Rae. You really need to remember that the NDP was not ready to govern when they won and he was surrounded by incompetent people he had to then elevate to ministerial positions. That government was doomed from the get go regardless of who was in charge, the recession that hit shortly thereafter only exacerbated the problems. I don't view the failure of the Rae government as a reflection of Mr. Rae alone, in fact, I believe anyone that does demonstrates a rather limited understanding of the political reality of the time. Rae has gone on to do substantial things since leaving provincial politics and is in and of himself both a brilliant man and a capable leader.

Now, all of that said, he's not really my pick for the Liberal leadership.... of course that doesn't matter as I burned my membership card years ago.

There's a free attack that doesn't contribute anything.

If everyone is agreeing with everyone, there would be no progress made. Maybe you should rethink your perspective and let people voice their opinion whether you like it or not, whether you agree with it or not.

only in the 416 and surrounding area.... get out to the 705, 519, and 613 you'll see things improve.... I'm not sure about the 807 (but who gives a shit about Thunder Bay and the frozen tundra north of there anyway).

I had the 'luck' of immigrating here in Bob Rae's time and it was without a doubt the lowest low of my life. Couldn't find a decent job, never had any money and the economy was a complete shambles.
I would rather have a good job and strong economy anyday over good welfare and social programs which (sometimes) just suck the life force out of the economy.
Don't get me wrong, I like these benefits and believe in their existance but I would rather have a well paying job than Bob Rae socialism which failed horribly.

Bob Rae is a nice guy, but a horrible politician.

The man's policies nearly ruined Ontario and we're still paying for his "social experiment".

I hope Canadians have enough common sense to not let this guy near parliament.

Well said as always RJ.

People must really have short and/or selected memories when it came to his reign.

I seriously fear for this whole country if he leads the charge.
That's not to take away from this academic accomplishments but he certainly has problems when it comes to leading.
Who doesn't remember, "Rae Days"; the worst piece of legislation ever....

Posted by Jayx1 on Nov-10-2006 21:45:

interesting how people cant take a difference of opinion. If bob rae does ever become PM i will have no respect for the electorate. He was the worst premier weve ever had. And u cant just blame the NDP, he was in charge. The buck stops with him.

$10 billion deficits? Rae Days? Social services cut? Job hiring quotas? Photo radar? Obscene! And we want this guy in ottawa?

Stephen Harper has been great.

hopefully when he is escorted out of office, he too will leave this country with you.

Maybe the two of you guys can join "the fight" in Afghanistan, and rid the world of terrorists.

Your attempt to avoid the statement is:
a) Petty
b) pathetic
c) lacking sense

a)This is petty for several reasons not the least of which include that no one who has a) cousin currently engaged in combat in Afghanistan c) three great uncles, one of which I am named by, who all died as a direct result of WW2 would ever disrespect those lost in combat.

b) Your statement is Pathetic, because you think that attempting to stake a claim that I am shameful is redundant.

c) lacking sense - because getting rid of Harper has nothing to do with rememberance day.
