2006-07 MLB Hot Stove thread

All the big offseason moves...

first one is Yanks trading Gary Sheffield to Tigers for 3 pitching prospects

looks like the red sox won the Matsuzaka bid

yeah thats all the IDIOTS are talking about on local radio... I could care less... so now there is NO SHOT in hell of Zito coming here.... great.... so he's definately a Yankee now..

Sox got enough DOMINICAN fans... they don't need another FOREIGN fan base... screw Japan... leave Japan to NY and Seattle...

Although it could very well be true it's only been Buster Olney from ESPN reporting that the Red Sux got Daisuke. So I guess I'm still waiting on real confirmation before I jump the gun. However, if they really paid $38-45 million just for the negotiating rights to a pitcher that has never pitched in the majors, along with the 40 million more they'd have to pay him for his contract... I just think it's quite risky. He could very well be Hideki Irabu. I was hoping the Yanks would get him but for like 25 million upfront. I don't think the Yanks will get Zito or Schmidt.

3 prospects is pretty good for a selfish 38 year old piece of crap Sheffield. Humberto Sanchez really has some promise...some gordito eating Fatolo Colon promise. Dude is 6 ft 6, 270 lbs. I'd like him to sumo wrestle Sidney Fatson.

i think so myself. I think the Yankees got way the better deal out of this. Sheffield is not the same player as 5 or 10 years ago(roid era). Everyone could significally notice his drop in numbers since he openly admitted to using "legal" roids. And i don't think he could play as a "role model" for the younger players on the team. If Pudge couldn't be their role model, do you think Sheff could do a better job ?

I'm just glad the Tigers got a Class A dickhead... so they're DONE... no repeat performance next year for them with a TUDE like Sheffield's....

Looking like the Yanks will trade Jaret Wright to the Orioles for reliever Chris Britton

Cubs will keep Aramis Ramirez, signing him to a 5-year deal, and Kerry Wood (with a 1-year deal)

A's fan here...

actually i think zito will go to the mets because-

1) omar minaya now realizes the value of healthy pitching
2) " said on TV that he "likes barry zito"
3) his buddy/former pitching coach rik peterson is there

so i suspect the mets are in the front running. the padres may be a dark horse as well, as it is a socal pitchers park

hey I hope he goes to the mets... or anyone other than the Yanks... I like Zito, I don't want him to be on a team like the Yanks, its like when Moose went to the Bronx... he was such a likeable guy, but then he puts on the pinstripes, and he is not so likeable anymore...

BUT, screw the west coast, bring Zito to the East Coast!!!

Posted by Member of X on Nov-14-2006 01:24:

I could see the Yankees getting into the Zito sweepstakes now that they have 3 pitchers when they resign overrated Mike Mussina. That would be Moose, Wang, and back surgery piece of crap the Big Bust Randy Johnson. Oh yeah, someone named Carl Pavano. He's worthless as Kyle Farnsworthless. I mean with the Red Sux forking over 42 MILLION dollars just to negotiate with Daisuke plus 40 million more in contract... sheesh that's a lot of moolah for an unproven guy. We shall see. Yanks can win the post season with Zito. Sure beats the Big Bust or Jaret Wright. Why would the Orioles trade for Jaret Wright? Oh wait... it's the Orioles. Zito is kind of mediocre though, 3.83 ERA over the last 5 years with a declining strikeout to walk ratio every year. Not a good warning sign for future success. I might be inclined to take a flyer on Gil Meche from Seattle though.

Welcome to the Yankees Mr. Barry Zito. Say hello to Hieki Irabu #2 Boston!

lol... well Sox did have Nomo for a couple seasons... and that was difficult enough for me to endure...

It will be tough if they get this guy, because he will be under SO MUCH Pressure, it won't even be funny... He will get no free pass or anything... so he better be the real deal, or it won't be pretty...

Sox fans will see the $$$$$ they paid for him, and expect Santana like numbers... I'm not expecting anything big... afterall, its the sox... can't expect too much... and Curt Schilling is like 53 now... time is winding down...

Most Sox fans are blasting off about how their pitching staff is gonna be great and I just don't get it. As you say, Schilling is like 53. Josh Beckett is worthless. ERA of 5? Well.. that's as good as the Big Bust Randy Johnson. He has this arrogant attitude that tries to throw fastballs by everybody and as a result, the dude gives up a lot of rocket launches into the upper deck. I agree about Matsuzaka, 90-100 million could be what they spend on the guy and that is enormous pressure. Beckett has good stuff and he didn't succeed in Boston. Look at all the guys that left the Yankees and went on to do well. It's a tough environment.

We'll see how Papelbon responds to being a starter now, I'm very curious about that.

Yeah, but I love Beckett... one of the few I like, well papi and beckett, thats about it... but only because of what he did years ago as a ROOK... yeah he wasn't great, but I still like the guy...

And I just heard Sox are talking to Adam Eaton... the next Matt Clement? Or will he actually do something? Or will they just talk to him and not sign him...lol...?

where will soriano go thats what I wanna know. he's gonna hit a bagillion HRs next year outside of RFK.

How sad is the NL.... Brandon Webb takes the Cy Young... and better yet TREVOR HOFFMAN comes in 2nd in the voting....wtf.... I thought Hoffman was done like 5 years ago... he keeps coming back... unreal....

Im surprsied the Sox put up that kind of money for an unproven pitcher at the MLB level at least. They're always whining about the Evil Empire swooping in on players like Matsui, Irabu, Contreras but theyr'e guilty of it this time. I don't expect this guy to put up 20 wins and an era of under 3.00 but he could win 15 games perhaps...still not worth a potential 90+ million. I'd rather sign Zito myself and I think Cashman will go all out for him. Wang, Mussina, Unit (although he could really suck this year!), Zito...looking good if it happens.

I'm just glad they got rid of "I can't pitch more than 5 innings" Jaret Wright.

Randy Johnson clearly already sucks. His expiration date is long past. He had an ERA of over 5 last year.

But he's still in prime form getting CAMERA's out of his face.... then again, Kenny Rogers is the MVP of shoving Cameras out his face...

Official winning bid for the right to talk with Matsuzaka and Boras - $51.1 million!
That's about double A-Rod's yearly salary

becasue this guy is unproven and if he does reach his prime, he wont be anything close to a messiah

If I was Red Sux fan I'd be more concerned about the 44 million dollar contract their offering J.D Drew, the guy is ALWAYS hurt, he sucks...
