need some advice on unlocked cell phones

i'm stuck with Cingular for another year, and i've been using the same shitty Motorola phone for almost 2 years now. i don't want to upgrade to another phone thru them because i'll have to sign another 2-year contract, and i don't know that i want to stay with Cingular after my contract is up. i also don't want to pay $175 to terminate my plan... but i really want a new phone.

i know very little about unlocked cell phones, but from what i gather, all i need to do is purchase a GSM unlocked phone and insert my SIM card? is that correct or is there more to it?

any advice would be much appreciated.

yep thats basically it, the unlocked phone is obviously gonna be more expensive than branded, but it's worth it.
i'm thinking of getting a couple different unlocked phones to pop my sim in and out of depending on where im going and communication needed.

I know where I'd like to insert my sim card.

yeah... expensive for sure, but i was hoping to find one for around $150. i just hesitate to buy them from sketchy sites or eBay.

anyone know any good sites for unlocked phones?

i dont know about america, but here u can basically just go to the store and pay the guy some money, and he'll unlock the phone for u.

works really great if u buy like a prepaid contract with no monthly fees.

I lol'd RJT!

I suggest going into a cel phone store (non branded) and askign what's up.

In europe and asia its no big thing. North American + Cel phones = MEGA LOSE.

yeah, that's the same here. I had my brothers phone when he left for canada. He was on orange & I'm on O2, so I paid 10 & had it unlocked by a guy on the market in town who does it, then just put my o2 sim in & have used it fine

actually even if you get a locked T-mobile phone its easy to get it unlocked. Buy a locked T-mobile phone will probably save you lots of money as well. Just have a friend who has t-mobile call T-mobile and have them tell the Customer service rep that They are planning to go over seas and need their phone unlocked. They will ask for an IMEI number of the phone and email the unlock code within 2 days. They do not check to see if thats is the actually phone that the person is using. I know, that' how i got my phone unlocked

i don't even think non-branded cell phone stores exist around here. everything is carrier-specific...

when i had SprintPCS way back in the day they were awesome, but it seemed like everything went downhill once i switched to Cingular. maybe it's just the way cell phone providers are nowadays, but when i was with Sprint they did sooo much cool stuff for good customers who were with them a long time. offered discounts on plans, gave me earlier night minutes, etc... but with Cingular, i can't even get a fucking hug from them. cold-hearted bitches.

i hate cell phone providers.

Nice. Way more techn0rz than mine. If this is actually all you have to do, I may just shell out the $139.00 for one of those at the beginning of next semester.

Edit: Oh snap! That one's cheaper!

Edit: NM - The cheapest I could find the other one for was from a VERY suspicious Euro site...

Ugh are you serious? Such an ugly version of the razr... I may hate the razr, but i think the design is much snazzier than this- it almost looks pre-razr to me. Don't like how it feels or the curves... just me though...

If i was getting a new phone, I'd get a Sony Walkman phone.. those ftw!

dont know if anybody else noticed this, but look at the seller guys shipping policy.

Shipping:
Shipping fee is for the 52 contiguous states. Shipping to Hawaii & Alaska. Sorry, WE DO NOT SHIP TO THE VIRGIN ISLANDS. Overnight shipping may be available for an additional fee, please contact us BEFORE using "Buy It Now". International shipping available to Canada only and ships via Fedex Ground. Rates are listed in our ads.

Since when do we have 52 states? and not only that, as it is now only 48 are contiguous. sorry to nitpick.

what are you talkin' about? that looks nothing like the Razr...

(unless you're talkin about the pic RJT posted and not the eBay link i posted)

i'm a huge fan of Samsung phones. Samsung and Sanyo have always been my favorites. Motorola can eat a dick for all i care. the Motorola phone i have now is the crappiest phone i've ever owned, and i refuse to ever buy a Motorola phone again. everyone and their mother has a fucking Razr... i'm so sick of seeing that phone.

I just renewed my contract with Cingular and got an LG Cu500 yesterday. Why do you dislike Cingular, Myra? I've had no problems whatsoever with it, as opposed to Verizon and Sprint, both of which I've had in the past.

Veritas.

Cingular has been good to me as well, though T-Mobile seems to have more of doperer phones.

Posted by UWM on Nov-11-2006 03:41:

Yeah T-Mobile definitely has the cooler phones. It's a good thing I can't get a Sidekick on Cingular though or else my already obscenely excessive text messaging habit would be even worse.

hahaha, true enough. At first I thought 'texting' was about as gay as it got, then I found my brows furrowed furiously texting someone and was like...omg...i might have gay...

Cingular isn't terrible, but Rob is on Alltel and i'd rather be on the same provider as him so we could get free cell-to-cell minutes. i haven't really had any major problems with Cingular but their customer service is kind of shitty, imo.
