Review: MB @ TIL (aka the last time I will ever go there)
At Cuzo's request, I am copying and pasting this directly from tribe.
Dear Management,
I have a few things to say about my night at TIL that I hope you take into consideration when planning future nights.
Due to technical issues with my own DJ gig this evening, I was able to make it to TIL at approximately 1am in anticipation of hearing Montreal techno DJ Misstress Barbara. Upon arriving at the venue, I was treated to an army of police in place of a line up. After discerning that the club was, in fact, open, I asked what cover was (20) and proceeded inside.
I was greeted by a stout blonde who demanded I open my purse and my wallet. This fine young lady proceeded to do a "search" which involved digging her fingers underneath my bra, and tearing it away from my body, supposedly searching for illicit substances. While I appreciate the need to run a clean operation at This is London, I do not appreciate having my breasts essentially yanked out of my bra upon entering. It totally foils my outfit.
I noticed that it was not overly busy, which I assumed was because of the large number of people who probably vowed not to return after being squished like sardines last Friday. This was pleasing. However, by 1:30am I began to get a little nervous that the lady of honor might not show, as her set was due to start at 1am.
Finally at 1:45 Barbara graces the decks. Wearing the required dress shoes, I ached for a place to sit after not too long. I seated myself on an empty seat with a couple of other nice people, however, we were promptly asked to leave by the table manager. I did not notice that these chairs were near a particular bottle service table that was in use, nor were they used by ANYONE after we vacated them.
This prompted me to go to the bar, where I ordered a $6 G&T. After giving the bartender $7, I did not receive any change until I asked for it specifically. As I waited for my change, I watched one of your elite table service clients pack four straws into his pocket and head to the washroom.
I returned to the dancefloor where I met a few genuine Barbara fans, people who knew about the music and the DJ. This basically made my night. I remained on the dancefloor until about 3am when some guy attempted to talk to me by grabbing me by the back of my neck. It was also around this time that Barbara packed up her shit - after a whopping 90 minute set, if that.
At this time I decided to make my way to where some friends were to say goodbye. I stood in the same spot where I had stood earlier in the night, and within moments, a bouncer put both of his hands on my arm and asked me to step back. I asked where, exactly, and he pointed to a spot 5 feet away. I asked him to take his hands off of me and I moved to the requested location.
Within seconds another bouncer asked me to move to another spot, another 5 feet away. getting somewhat annoyed, I still complied, only to have a THIRD bouncer herd me to a spot on the dancefloor.
At this point, 4 different creeps had touched me in a 5 minute span and I decided it was best I leave before making a complete scene. As I exited the main area of the club, I paused on the stairs to dial a phone call - only to be herded again.
I really do not understand why such "crowd control" tactics are necessary when the club is not even at half capacity. Further, your staff may want to think a bit further about touching patrons who have done absolutely nothing confrontational.
Lastly, this one is for Barbara. For the love of all things that are good and holy, please do not ever play at this retarded club again. I hope you realized tonight what a joke it is for someone so established and who deserves the respect and acknowledgement that you do.
Sincerely,
That girl who won't even go to TIL for Barbara anymore. and that says a lot.
wow that fucked up!
im sorry bout ur nite
1.5 hour only....thats BS! death to TIL, makes me kinda happy i went to OPM to see DJ Dan. He delivered quite a wicked set. altho i still dont believe its worth #5 Dj in the world....i had a great time. met new peeps in the states....
it was nice meeting you Sarah (i hope i spelt it right)!
it wasnt as bad of a experience for me though..it was just a regular night at TIL as i saw it, obviously not the greatest venue for MB, especially for the kind of music that she plays
about the search, everytime i get searched i always get a nice ball tap from both of the girls, i dont know if its mandatory but i dont really appreciate being knocked in the balls every time i come in, some people actually enjoy it though..
The boob search doesn't surprise me (out of the times I've been there, it's happen twice) --- but really, is it necessary for it to be done?
I'm surprised about the bouncer situation. I've never heard about bouncers being that annoying on regular nights. I guess it depends on who the bouncers were that night (but I speculate that they are the same on most nights). Or perhaps the whole security thing from last Friday may have something to do with last night.
Anyway, TiL is a beautiful venue...but it sucks that you had a crap time that you'll never want to go back
thats y I went to footy instead last night
jokes.. no...i like TIL.. but after last weekend.. I am going to think long and hard before the next time I go there... sorry to hear about your poor experience ive had two nights like that at TIL... horrid.. oh well.. what can you do..
Skipper do you think they were trying to move you around so that the place looked more full that it was? Try and get people on the dance floor?
Im scared to go to Nick Warren now (I really dont want to miss him).
I almost hope I feel the same way after Lee in Decemeber, so I too have an excuse never to go back there.
Like any other club in any city, TiL has its good and its bad. There is no denying in that. For me it has been mostly good so i still like the venue and enjoy going there. But, from what Sarah has written above ... thats total bullshit. Sorry to hear you didnt have a good time and stuff Sarah
In short TIL is marketed to the drive @ 5 crowd, I'm not gonna lie I tune in here and there lol...but it's that crowd you dread who do make up most of z103's listeners, go to TIL and go to be seen, Practice your pouty lips or perhaps the "blue steel" for the fellas and you'll fall in with the majority of the crowd.. The venu is very nice but once again a crowd who likley dumps their entire paycheck on a gucci outfit, or uses a little coke to go along way (bouncers, bottle service, management). For many of us its about whose spinning, how live the crowd is and enjoying ourslves for many of the drive at 5ers its about being treandy, boosting ego's then dropping a few hundred or thousand, then when they leave 8 of them pile into 88 civic hatchback..you all know what I'm talking about!
wow im sorry to hear u had that bad of a time Sarah
my only GOOD experiance at TIL was back before charles owned it. at the Cher Farewell Tour : End of tour party. im not sure how much it's changed since then..
Apparently the regular TIL crowd was at SCHMOOZE. I had a work party there last night so I had no choice but to go and it was what I expected... Fucking awful crowd...even worse tunes. Other than the crappy music... the vibe, faces and stilletos all reminded me of my last visit to TIL. Sorry to hear your MB experience at TIL was not a good one Skipper.

These great djs need to be transbooked to clubs like Sonic or Koolhaus.
I honestly don't think these djs know what TIL is all about and the kind of clientelle it brings. Half the reason why a dj spins is to feel the engery from the crowd. How can they feel that energy when there's a bunch of "GINO THE GINNYs" pouting their lips at every hot person that walks past them. It just doesn't go.
If these great djs would spin at a club like Koolhaus or Sonic, I'm sure they would feel so much better about the whole dj/clientelle love affair.

| Originally posted by Skipper I don't think so, I think it was because they thought Barbara was about to leave and maybe they were trying to clear a path for her? which was stupid because she was still packing up. |
