Social Acception

Are there rules to social acceptance?

Posted by Sunsnail on Nov-12-2006 04:00:

Yes...

Well, lets define them, now.

You don't have to be attractive to be accepted by society. Nor do you have to be a productive member of society. You can be eccentric and be accepted. Or you can follow the crowd and be accepted.

There's a lot to this, so I think we can get some good discussion going here.

it depends who you define as society and who are the ones that accept you.

Anyone can be accepted, but it does not mean they can be accepted by all of society.

gotta go to bed... will discuss more of this later ... if you guys are bored go watch some Entourage season 3 episodes

Most surefire way to be accepted is to a) be true to yourself, and b) be sensitive to other people's feelings and probable reactions to any behaviour.

Naw see...if you elbow her, it'll leave a tell-tale bruise. At least if you drug her you have the chance of the toxins leaving her system before anyone knows what you've done.

Well it's pretty hard to be both on the same time now isn't it?

Caring about feelings is for emo kids.

It would seem so. It is a fine balance. But being true to oneself (at least in my definition) doesn't preclude change or adaptation. I think We are all in a state of becoming, and hence can pick and choose what we become. But you must never "pretend" or deny your past or the things about yourself that you can't change.

If you, for example, take a particular person or group of people as a role model then aim to develop the required characteristics and make them your own. Still be you - but with those characteristics rather than pretending to actually be that other person. It's hard to explain but I'm sure you know what I mean. To anyone with any social skill it is painfully obvious when someone is faking.
