Review: Joey Beltram @ Footwork
You know its oldschool when hardly anyone on TA has any hype about this guy....A LEGEND just came thru TO, and there were like 5 TA's there... wow. 14.5 yrs ago was the last time I saw this guy spin! (age alert), but wow, was it good to hear him again! Techno fans should kick themselves for missing out.
Got to Footwork w/Dallas & endless summer (Gabi) during Jelo's set. He was playing some funky tunes, but it seemed that once or twice during the set, songs would end, and a totally new style would start up.
Crowd seemed a little thin at first, but seemed to pick up when Joey came on. Ran into Skipper, Mobius, High on PSI & Asian Kevin (forever a lurker). Due to having been woken up at 7:30am yesterday and unable to unfortunately not squeezing a nap in before the outing as I'd hoped (and probably that joint too, lol) definitely had an effect on my energy level. As good as the music was, I spent the entire 2 hr set sitting down, sometimes fading in and out of conciousness, but don't get me wrong- I was really enjoying the music! He played an amazing techno set. Carlos was able to ID 2 of Beltram's older tracks, and that's about it. At one point early on, I swore it sounded like "Energy Flash" was about to come on, but the song never came to fruition. The crowd was really up for it, lots of cheers shouted out.
Got Beltram to autograph my "Future" rave shirt (the only commemorative old school rave shirt I have, complete w/DJ's names on the back, that I have from a rave in Maryland back in JUNE 1992 - the first/ last time I ever saw Beltram). Explaining this shirt to Skipper even earned me a 'bow down' from her, lol. Wish you coulda stayed to hear his set, Sarah.
Hopefully someone brings Beltram back again soon, and not in another 6 yrs.
~waits for Carlos's review, who said it was 'the best techno set he ever heard'~
And a big WTF to the well dressed guy who came and sat next to me and ever so quickly smoked some meth or crack or god-knows-what right next to me.
A first ever for my clubbing books....
Beltram was fucking sick! Joey has been on my list of DJ's to see since I heard his 2AM CD back in 99, so I was definitely excited to finally see him, and man did he deliver. He laid down a serious techno set with hints of funk here and there. I would have to say that it was probably the best live techno set I've witnessed/heard. It's been a very long time since I've danced for the length of an entire set, I think the last time I did that was for Bad Boy Bill at the CNE. Beltram belted out 2 hours of relentless beats, giving us a few seconds to catch our breaths before kicking into high gear again. I didn't really recognize any tracks, but every single one of them was top notch, and hearing him drop Arena & Ballpark was great, and I think I heard hints of Energy Flash at one point.
Hopefully it won't be another 5 or 6 years before he returns to Toronto, because I'd definitely go see him again.
Thanks Joey for great night.
Nat & Dallas, it was nice seeing you both, Corinne says Hello.
Thanks for the post, Nat. Glad to acknowledge Joey is a Legend.

Sweet Jeebus. I haven't enjoyed a heavy techno set that much since Laurent Garnier at System a couple years back. It helps that Footwork has such a great vibe to it. Only my second time there, but it just might be my new home.
It was an incredible night of of techno beats, and I had so much fun dancing. I like to this of it as "I got a foot"work"out at footwork
I am so happy I went out and partied and actually had fun, the pre event at the Global Village. Thanks for that!
Glad I could help out with this T-shirt signing
! great times, awesome Tunes. Dispite that "crack-meth" head everything seemed to go smoothly. Happy to see Gabi, Mobius, KEvin, Sarah & Erin, Jessica and Sean working at Footwork, see you next time on the dancefloor!
Kudos to Footwork for bringing in a DJ who isn't on the "DJ 100" poll, but has TECHNO/EDM roots deeper than most. And the vibe is NEVER wrong at Footwork either.
Two bangin' techno fists in the air for the night overall.
