Bruce: CFL officials racist, take bribes

11/13/2006

After his team lost the East Division final, Toronto Argonauts all-star wide receiver Arland Bruce accused Canadian Football League officials of being racist and accepting bribes in order to influence the game that saw the Montreal Alouettes win 33-24.

"I don't think the referees like Pinball," Bruce said after the game, referring to Argos head coach Michael Clemons, who is black. "I think they are racists. How come there are no black referees in the CFL? They're racists."

Bruce also stated that officials had been unfair to the Argonauts during the season. He also accused the Alouettes without giving specifics, of paying off officials in the East final.

"How much did [Montreal's] coach pay the refs, that's what I want to know?" Bruce said. "Good luck to them in the Grey Cup. I hope they pay them off there, too. Make another $5,000."

CFL director of officiating George Black refuted Bruce's statements.

"I'd deny anything like (racism) exists," Black told the Toronto Star. "If I thought anyone operated in that fashion I'd fire them in a heartbeat."

After supporting this team like many others this year, this type of shit makes me reconsider wanting to even attend a game next season. They get absolutely smoked by Montreal, and this bonehead has the nerve to blame their loss on fucking racism?! Pinball is one of the most respected people in this league, whether you're talking about his playing (or now) coaching career.

Although Bruce is likely the most exciting player on the team, and perhaps the entire league - he may have done some serious damage to the already thin fan base this team had.

Bruce softens stance on CFL, officials

MISSISSAUGA, Ont. (CP) - Arland Bruce III didn't say he was sorry, but he did soften his stance one day after accusing CFL officials of being racist.

The Toronto Argos receiver told reporters that he didn't believe the CFL was a racist league but the frustration of continually receiving unbalanced calls made him wonder about the possible reasons for them.

Following Toronto's 33-24 loss to Montreal in the East final yesterday, Bruce said the team received unfair calls because coach Pinball Clemons is black and questioned why there are no black referees in the league.

Bruce is an all-star wide receiver.
