Tsunami warning issued for Japan's north coast Last Updated: Wednesday, November 15, 2006 | 7:22 AM ET CBC News A tsunami warning was issued on Wednesday after an earthquake with a magnitude of about 8 rocked the Kuril islands north of Japan. The tsunami warning was issued for the eastern coast of Japan's northern island, Hokkaido, and stretches down the Pacific coast of the main island to Tokyo. Officials warn a tsunami could be two metres high and could strike within an hour. Residents on the sparsely populated Hokkaido island have been urged to head for higher grounds. Various agencies have reported the quake's magnitude as high as 8.1. The Kuril islands stretch from the northern tip of Japan to Kamchatka, Russia. They separate the Sea of Okhotsk from the Pacific Ocean. Russia and Japan both lay claim to the thin chain of islands, which are known in Japanese as the Chijima islands. The tsunami warning follows an earlier earthquake, which struck at around 6:15 a.m. local time. More to come. |

Tsunami... sounds like a kind of sushi. The revenge type.

A powerful undersea earthquake prompted tsunami warnings Wednesday for Japan and Russia but the danger appeared to pass after a series of tiny waves hit the northern Japanese coast.

The waves did not swell higher than 16 inches and rapidly diminished in size...
So the tsunami was a wash?

tsunami warnings happen all the time but never made news here until after the big one in 2004.
BTW i was in phuket thailand in april and youd never know that the tsunami had happened. Most things were already rebuilt.
Anyone here ever drive all the way to Moncton to witness the famous tidal bores?

| From Wikipedia Petitcodiac River in the Bay of Fundy, New Brunswick, Canada, formerly the highest bore in North America, over 2 metres (6 feet) high. Reduced to little more than a ripple due to causeway construction and extensive siltation. |
