DJ Arrested for Mashups

Disclaimer: This may be old so I apologize in advance if many of you have seen this...note that this was taken Vision's post on Mixshare.

"Portland, OR (September 3, 2006) - At 2:30 this morning, local DJ "World Famous Audio Hacker" was taken into custody by police after a performance at The Glitch Lounge, an underground dance club in the warehouse district downtown. Although specific charges have not yet been publicly made, one officer confirmed the DJ was taken into custody for performing unlicensed bootleg remixes, known as "mash-ups", at the venue.

"Currently, the U.S. performance license that permits DJs and night clubs to play copywritten songs," explained the unnamed officer, "is a strict license that does not allow home-made alterations under the same license. Once the illegal versions of the music are performed in public, it becomes a crime that can be enforced by an officer."

When pressed to confirm if any complaints had been filed against World Famous Audio Hacker, the officer simply stated: "We were made aware of the nature of material that this DJ typically performs based on a complaint by one of the copyright owners. Once the illegal art in question was performed during the night, our officers were empowered to take him into custody."

In other words, it appears there was a specific complaint against a well-known mash-up by World Famous. The officers were present during the performance, and apparently were issued a warrant for arrest as soon as the mash-up in question was played at World Famous' Sunday night performance.

Some speculation has been made by fans that Warner Music may have filed the complaint due to a history of conflict between the label and World Famous.

We are still working the details to confirm this story.

There has been no word if the Glitch Lounge will lose their performance license in relation to this arrest.

It'll never hold up in court, if it even makes it that far.

Just last week I heard that "Afterhumps" mashup of Aftermath and My Humps for like the millionth time in a south beach club. That stuff is played everywhere. Sounds like they had it in for this guy and really went out of their way to get him for some reason.

So, basically, all remix services are illegal. And stuff like this is illegal as well.

What a joke!

why not make dj'ing illegal

Posted by orange_j on Nov-15-2006 21:57:

isnt every 'mix' or transition a 'mash-up' between those two songs?? That is just ridiculous. But this seems like an isolated indcident because a copy right owner made the complaint. im sure most DJ's producers arent gonna be scoping out clubs and pressing charges.

Serves him right. I hate mash ups.

yeh under this law i think all mixs would be considered a "mash up"

if my song was used in a mash up i would be happy that it was being used like that and that some one likes it

if so then my bad...i went to his site and cant find anything like that so got a link?

He should have been arrested for that name

Posted by discobiscuit on Nov-17-2006 18:36:

the only way he could get in trouble is if he used the song/remix to promote himself:

"come see me play this remix at this club"

if he is making money off of someone elses music then he can be sued, but he had a dj liscence and people werent going to that club for the sole purpose of hearing 1 specific remix.

he will not face any charges...

now what about selling mixed cd's... is that illegal
