Tired of minimal

anyone else tired of minimal and all that clicky, deep and wannabe meaningfull, "intellegint", pretentious music?

i know i am...

Posted by UWM on Nov-15-2006 19:30:

Cool, so don't listen to it.

Posted by RJT on Nov-15-2006 19:32:

I'm tired of people who limit the scope of what they enjoying hearing to one genre, then getting "tired" of said genre, and creating threads searching for a new genre or sound that they will eventually tire of and post yet another "Tired of..." thread.

It's a vicious cycle some of you folks get locked into here.

Bit of a narrow view to take regarding anything, don't you think?

Well, it seems to me that in general (not referring to you specifically), people find a sound they love and overlisten to the point where they are eventually just worn out of hearing such similar tunes. The sound that was "hip" or "cool" a month ago is worn out so fast, that immediately people start looking for the next "trend" in the music to latch onto and play out, without giving the slightest thought that exactly what happened to trance, progressive, acid house, electro house, minimal, etc. is going to happen to whatever new "sound" they obsessively co-opt.

Why not just listen to good music?

Posted by UWM on Nov-15-2006 19:39:

Rob it's probably just best to pat this guy on the head and leave him be.

WOW ANOTHER DUDE WHO CANT FIND GOOD MUSIC TO LISTEN TO

www.beatport.com
www.djdownload.com

I recommend starting out by searching all genres besides "minimal"

..although, you will most likely miss out on alot of good minimal tracks which you obviously havn't heard, as this thread would not exist otherwise...

Posted by RickyM on Nov-15-2006 19:46:

You shouldn't be listening to minimal in the first place, it's a load of bollocks - minimal to me means lazy.
Of course there are a few exceptions, but the vast majority of minimal is shite.

Writing off an entire genre as shite is unfortunate...

Posted by SMC on Nov-15-2006 19:49:

Yeah these "tired of" threads are really bullshit, like someone is forced to listen to anything in the first place. People have habits that lead to results that do not please them and then they go make "tired of" threads to try and convince themselves that the problem is external. I'm gonna start eating pizza everyday and two weeks from now i'm gonna start a tired of pizza thread and see if anybody agrees on that pizza is shit and not that i'm an idiot.

I also find it humorous that a large amount of what people today refer to as "minimal" is really anything but.

It's my opinion though that minimal is crap, apart from a few tracks that I like....
I'm guessing you like minimal though?

Well...minimal is sort of self-explanitory really.

Unfortunately, that just isn't the case anymore. True, traditional minimal, is a far sight from the majority of tech-house that's labelled (and demonized) by many as minimal today.

This post wreaks of arse. Writing off an entire genre - despite how much of it you think you've covered - is a very arrogant and narrow minded thing to do. I don't care if you're names 'Johnny I-Hate-Minimal,' it makes you you look small and stupid.

Posted by montana on Nov-15-2006 20:11:

the basic channel sound. the hawtin sound. the alan oldham sound. that's proper minimal

Posted by Akazi on Nov-15-2006 20:12:

so many replys.

well i agree with RJT on the answer of the why question!

First of, im very obsessive about music, sometimes its even more that music to me, might sound stupid but music for me is a guide thru life.
I have to learn, not to let music influence me this much.

to be honest the influence that minimal had on me just started to become clearer and clearer. At least i believe that the music that a person is listening to influences them alot (i believe in it, others might not ), be it behaviour, view on life and the thinking mode.

i just realised that minimal music is not for me, it just doesnt do me any good...

and regarding good music, i listen to different music aswell

i didnt want to offend anyone with my thread, im not saying that its shit music or anything (there are some very very awesome tunes ot there)im just saying that this music just isnt for me.

Just wanted to exchange thoughts with people who might have the same feeling about it

I like some, but not most. There is alot of crap minimal, I'll definatley agree, but every now and then something really good comes out in that area, and if you aren't following you can miss it... such as:

Daniela Stickroth - Chest In The Attic
Guido Schneider - Moesko
Soleib - Integrale
Luciano - Bomberos (long track but ripper of a bassline)
Triple R - Polyester
Alex Under - Balas De Paja Maja
Gabriel Ananda, Cio D'or - Lauschgoldengel

You might not like those tracks, but they are definatly not bog standard clicks and beeps minimal...

Posted by MichaelBoogerd! on Nov-15-2006 20:27:

I can't stand most minimal-techy tracks, but its the "genre" i listen to the most at the moment...

+1 @ clovis...

Gabriel Ananda, Cio D'or - Lauschgoldengel
and
Minilogue - The Girl From Botany Bay

Made even me* respect Sasha.

hmmm....i dont know rob, minimal techno to me is Matthew Dear, some of Apparat's productions, Pier Bucci, Alex Under etc...

Tech House is more like what Carl Cox plays..

Maybe just take a break from listening to it then go back to it. I love 'minimal' stuff, all of it including the 90's tracks right through to modern-day.

It was about 80% of the stuff I listened to at the beginning of the year. I stepped back and had a little drum n bass phase which I enjoyed and still do. I'm getting back into the minimal stuff now though. However i'd say probably 40% of what I listen to now is minimal. I feel better for my music taste because of taking a breather and checking out more stuff as variety is a wonderful thing.

One mix that has blown my mind only tonight in fact was hearing a Tim Xavier (Afternoon Coffee Boys) mix from 30-10-2006 titled Zombie Mix. Just try the more obscure stuff like netlabels, Archipel etc. Theres a lot of quality out there.

What I mean is, from what I've heard, I think minimal is crap, although obviously there is the odd exception...surely there are genres that you think are mainly crap, but yet there is the odd track in that particular genre that you like?
