the recent TOTA "DJ" Self-Promo / Lingo/ Attitude problem
Ok Im sorry everyone, and if Im the only one who feels this way Ill quickly shut up. But quite frankly Ive had enough of this whole DJ lingo/ attitude, and machismo that has recently swept the board and I want to see if Im alone.
I mean fine, Im guilty of posting a set every once a while (usually one a year) or trying to help promote a local event by bumping it, but recently its slightly gotten out of hand The constant DJ jargon of helping to sponsor ones gig or advice on which bomb or gem to drop next has gone far past exasperating. The continuous roll call hi-jacking, the non-stop review back scratching in order to get a future performance, the free guestlist passes, the live-set recordings, the location endorsement, the promotional shots, the bumping of a thread with a post bereft of any meaning, the ass kissing, the flyer artwork, the unremitting stellar weekly club events held in non-club locations, will the pestering ever stop?
I want to stress that Im here to support our talent (there is a plenty), however I think this has gone overboard and I think it makes us look cheap. I know this board hasnt been about trance music for quite some time now, but when did it become a stage for shameless self promotion.

Jon supports proper use of roll calls and event threads. - Jon is saying that sometimes people are using TOTA to self-promote (either themselves or their events) more than what should be considered reasonable. - The "unreasonable" self-promotion is often routine, repeated and casual reference to one's musical/event endeavors in entirely unrelated threads. - We have all seen some (intentional and/or unintentional) self-promotion in threads that really shouldn't have it. After a while this type of activity is bound to cause annoyance. This annoyance is what Jon is bringing to the forefront with this thread. My $0.02: - Promoters/talent should NOT start roll call threads for events. Promoters and talent should stick to the event threads. If TOTAs are interested in enough to start a roll call thread (un-encouraged by promoters/talent) then great - the event has support and it deserves a roll call. - Promoters/talent and TOTAs should NOT bump roll call threads (per Margaret's post). TOTA attendees should post in it once, move along - keep event discussion in the event thread. Bumping roll calls creates a false sense of support. - Promoters/talent need to be overly-conscious of their posts in non-music related threads. When a discussion about a non-music topic has event/promoter/talent "hints", "name drops" or "references" about inserted into it - it really sets the bar low (desperation?) and isn't respectful to TOTA as a whole (nor does it project a positive impression on the event/promoter/talent). - TOTA has a vast amount of talent and it is worthwhile to support talent and events that deliver a QUALITY experience. Promoters and talent have the responsibility to make sure that they ALWAYS deliver a high-quality product as the the alternative alienates the key base of support TOTA offers. Sometimes it appears that TOTA supports for the sake of supporting without emphasis on quality. Without focusing on quality - the end product is bound to deteriorate - which nobody on TOTA wants to see. |

I'm with you man. However, I haven't had the chance to see much of it myself mainly because I choose to stay out of those threads and not take part. So it's not a huge bother to me. I say promote but do it with taste and tact and just with an air of thinking that says "This is what I'm doing, check it out" and if that's not what's happening and it's just completely out of control with shameless self promotion then
.
I love those forums, especially the dj booth, haven't checked that out in AGES.

I can see some of what you are talking about, but what do you mean by dj "lingo/attitude"? In reference to your subject.

I've only edited the title as it's apparently misleading |
I think as long as those involved with the TA events follow the same rules and guidelines as other promoters, there should be no issue.

I really really really don't mind TOTA DJs playing anywhere, in fact I love it.
Not only that but I also love checking out things in unconventional venues, so I don't agree with your view on that Jon. For example, places like Green Room or GVP or Cherry Beach. That's when it's really fun and you don't have to worry about clubland politics.
What I do stop the buck at are house parties. I find it funny and sort of scary that people would announce house parties on a public forum, then go on to review the party for hundreds of pages talking about how drunk everyone got at someone's house. lol. Again, I don't mind house parties at all but seriously, don't you have an email list that you can use instead of TA? That's what I do for house parties. I know the response to this is "but all my friends are on TA, so it's ok". Well, if you know 40 000 people or even the 2 000 that read TOTA then we can talk but until then, keep that stuff private. Do you want to get robbed? Cuz I can have that arranged.
As for the blatant DJ self promotion, it really is only a bunch of people that are doing it. I would suggest everyone follow these simple rules which I always follow for events that I am attending:
1. Post an event thread in the event forum which has all the info regarding the event including price and guestlist stuff.
2. Post a roll call with a simple link to the event thread.
3. If you are replying to a roll call, just do it once and don't make that thread a chat convo for the day, back and forth.
4. The person making the roll call shouldn't bump after every response. Seriously, if there is no interest, there is no interest. Let people decide for themselves and not have the event in there face at the top of the page all damn day.
Don't ever think of TOTA as just a forum. Peeps on here are like children, if you keep telling them to do something they are going to hate you and do the opposite.
I also wanted to add that the TOTA Promo sticky thread is one of the best things. It really has cleaned up TA.
Ultimately, TOTA needs a separate Roll Call section and a separate Review/Picture section. But that just seems like a pain in the ass. The horrible problems of a city that has so many great events with great DJs and greatest supporting friends.
speaking of which....
this is a very good weekly thing to attend because no one makes any money off (infact we all just end up spending alot..lol)

House parties, cottage parties, 'non conventional venues, what's the difference?
