S Shaped vs STR8 Tonearms
To My Amazement, I Have Just Found Out That There's A Stanton Dealer In Cyprus. But What's Even Better Is That He Is Located Right Here In Nicosia. What's Ever Better Than That Though
Is That There's Some Kind Of 'Sale' Going On And Some People Have Purchased Some Stuff At Low Prices. So Naturaly I'm Thinking Of Checking It Out As I Am On The Hunt For A Good Deal On TTs To Buy. What Bothers Me Though Is That So Far I've Only Seen Straight Tonearms On Stanton TTs. After Being Involved For A Period Of Time, I Have Been Left With The Impression That STR8 Tonearms Are Only Ment 4 Scratching DJs And Could Wear Out Vinyl Faster As Opposed To S Shaped Tonearms. Pls Share Your Views On The Matter With Me, Should I Buy TTs With STR8 Tonearms Or Should I Forget About It?
Get the new Numark ttx-1's. They have interchangable tone arms and come with both. Check out the site at www.ttx1.com They are boasting to be the best turtables out there, even better than Technics.
Veldrid, Thanx 4 Your Reply, But The Problem Is That I'm On A Tight Budget At The Moment, That's Why I Was Considering To Buy Stantons Now That They're On Sale And I Might Be Able To Get Good Decks For A Low Price. So I Wanna Know If It's Worth Getting Stanton TTs Which Have Straight Tonearms. I Just Wanna Know What Are The Differences With An S Shaped Tonearm, Especially If My Vinyl Will Wear Out Quicker Or Not.
i'd go for str8-100s if i were u

str8-100's come with a S shape tonearm option if you want it. but str8-100 cost too much.. esp. if you are on tight budget... check out numark tt2's.. i like em alot ... u can get it for around $230 u.s if you search hard enough. but yea.. bout the straight arms.... i hear that they do wear out your vinyl.. .but that occurs after a long long time.... well, depends if you are a pro DJ or not i guess. but anyhow... i hear that the M.O.S(ministy of sound) are switch'n their decks from Technics to stanton str8-100's! i have never used stanton str8 series so i dont know how they feel.... and dont know much about it except that they are straight tonearms lol but a lot of people i have talked to that owns them(str8-80) seem to like em alot.
Straight tone-arms put more pressure on the record most of the time- therfore, yes, they wear it out faster.
Also, they're mainly for scratching because they're more stable but scratching wears the record faster and also doens't blend well with Trance in most cases!
Also, there's that channel delay thing with straght arms that bothers perfectionists like moi...
I say, go for S- shaped arm! (If you buy a TT with straight, just buy a new one, it's a good investment in terms of keeping your vins in good shape!)

Thanx 4 The Tips PPL
Stanton DOES make a non-straightarm turntable, the ST-100.
It's a STR8-100 with a curved tonearm. pretty cool looking

I have the STR8-60's (... im saving up for some pdx2000's) and they have the str8 tonearm, and I've NEVER heard any ware on my records, and I play them alot, cause I dont have that many
. if you dont max out your counter-weight, which is not neccessary unless you're doing some insane scratching or somehting, then the ware on records should be fine. and people say there's worse sound quality with str8's, but you can't hear it, unless you have some insane $2000 mixer that can preserve sound quality perfectly from your TT. Go for the stantons if they're accessible and on sale. never had any problems with mine.
well, I'm also about to buy TT's. And I cant decide between Gemini pt2100/2400 and Stanton str8-80. The reason is the same: straight tone arm.
Stanton has more quality, on the other hand straight tone arm. I talked to many ppl, most of them told me that it's not a big deal. So I think, I'm gonna buy Stanton str8-80.
btw, what bout the new str8-90? does any1 know anything about them?
didnt know the STR8-90's are out... maybe you are thinking of the STR8-100's? i'll have to look into this.
anyhow, smart choice on the stanton... i hate to dis on a brand, but gemini falls in the JuNkBuCkEt in mah book :P
ive used a few of stanton's tables and like them. I also use thier RM3S mixer, and it's TIGHT for a cheapie mixer!

@MERiDiAN5i2 - Totally I Agree With You, A Friend Keeps Tellin' Me Gemini Are One Of The Top Brands, But I Don't Like Them One Bit.
true, just take alook at Gemini's mixers.. .. they're a joke.
hmm have u guys used any of the gemini tables?... i have used the pt2400 and sa2400 and find them to be pretty good... good torque(2.2kg) solid platter, and has tons of option...i have also used tech 1200's and comparing them i cant see y no one would consider the gemini pt2400 or sa2400 ( so much cheaper then tech and has better torque) but i must admit that the platter of techs is what stands out the most but thos two gemini models are almost as solid as the techs(platter wise).... havent used stantons yet but everyone i have spoken to like them a lot... some even more then techs.
and yes.. gemini mixers... most of them are piece of shits! =)
well, IMHO, the reason to get technics is because they are standard.
if your gonna play out at clubs/parties.. you will probably be spinning on 1200's... so owning these tables and being very used to them is quite important.
