Review: George Acosta @ Viva 11/17/06
Got there around 1:30am, the bouncers were dicks and the people were quite pushy, even in coat check.
Key played a good set judging from the last bit of it that I got to hear.
George Acosta started off slow... and stayed that way. His build ups were too long and the bass line pretty much killed every track. His set didn't go anywhere and by the middle of it I was falling asleep, standing up, on the dance floor.
Sketch factor was way up there with all the asians kinda just standing around and giving weird stares to everyone.
My condolences go out to Dima, him being so much taller than everyone else seems to have gotten the most stares.
Overall... the night sucked. The venue was alright but the people creeped me out and were quite rude and Acosta was a disappointment.
The only good thing about last night was seeing familiar faces.
Its not a bad venue. In the middle of nowhere!! LOL Christ I was sober, apart from caffeine, and the light system they had was trippy enough. It was funny how people still smoked in there, security was pretty lax. Weird guy in the bathroom too...wtf? For handtowels or some sh*t? The bass was waaay too cranked in that place. I was there a little before 1am and from then to 6am (when I had enough of whatever lame track was playing) I have no idea when they switched DJs...I assumed the louder thumping was Acosta, but it was soooo bad did he even play trance?
An MC would have helped me out.
I could care less about the crowd. Its the same mix of Asians with their sunglasses on that go to Guvernment/KH anyways, its not exactly a new crowd.
Oh, and what was all the napkins for? Was that for coke? To wipe your nose with or was that for sanitary arrangement?
ha!
I think I made the wise decision.

Now that I've had a bit of sleep, I can think logically how to sum up the night, I have more mixed reactions now then when I left....
First, the positive of last night was the slight improvement of the venue. The new lights they put in are spectacular, they made some tracks go from average to really good. I also noticed that the atmosphere is getting a little better, the sketchy asians aren't as zombied out watching the DJ.... they are dancing alot more, getting into the music. The sound in there has always been good if the DJ knows the system right, so no complaints there.
Onto the music. I arrived around 12:10, just to hear Chiclet playing her last couple of tracks (sorry
). Key was building it up nicely for Acosta, all anthems but whatever that is what you come to expect from most of Toronto's locals. Then around 2:30, Acosta comes on with a brilliant opening track (ID anyone?) and I was pumped for a good Trance set. Man did he ever go downhill from there
. He did play some good tracks that I noticed, there was just no vibe around it and the tracks that made up the majority of his set all sounded the same (boring hard/techy bassline with a long crappy build up that just went no where). Some of the tracks I remember right now....
Tiesto-Dance 4 Life (a harder/tech remix)
Sean Tyas-Lift
Marco V-Any better, or...
The Prodigy-Smack my bitch up (some bootleg or mash up)
Didn't stay for Mark Oliver, thanks to Sonja, sorry you didn't like Viva, but thanks for the ride home
. Nice meeting you Dima, yeah all those sketchy older Chinese ladies were looking at you like they thought you were from outer space. Also Naveed, awesome talking man, giving our expert commentary for the whole night
.
i think Acosta is one of the most overrated djs ever. I dont know why would you expect anything good from him.
Kinda glad I decided not to go too. I hadn't seen Acosta for a while and last time he didn't do much for me either. Can't wait to make my return to Viva though, but the DJ has to be worth the trouble.

they need to get some more sick djs there i wanna go back!
Is there life... On Mars?
Acosta is one of the few people I haven't seen yet, but have always wanted to, sorry to hear he wasn't good though.
got there at 1:01, 2 minutes too late to qualify for 15 dollar entrance so had to pay 25. why? because they closed 404 North and 401 collector was moving at 10km/h
anyways, wow the first hour was amazing tunes. Yea it was anthems but it was songs that I havent herd in years, old school trance choons. Loved it, i think the dj was Key, good job! This track made my night:
Cosmic Gate - Exploration of Space (some rmx) SIIICKKK!!!!!!!!
Acosta came on around 2 i think, he played ok, but his transitions were SOOOOOOOOOOOOO LONG like 3 minutes at least, they were really boring too. His builds were pretty nice and he played a couple sick tracks like SMack my Bitch up which was mixed in with a build of a sick trance song.
overall good night, acosta disappointed but Key was sick so it balanced out. nice meeting some new faces =)

george acosta is hurting
music awesome... scene is too cracked for me though.
I had to leave early
Sorry to hear many of you didn't enjoy his set.
The new lighting system really is killer.
