Post something interesting about your country, state or city

Inspired by the post something about yourself thread last week, I thought this might turn out interesting.

So, post something interesting about your country, state or city that you think others might not know.

I'll start.

In 1988, Australia converted all it's bank notes from the regular paper/linen notes to a plastic polymer, effectively wiping out bank note forgery here. Since then, a number of other countries have followed suit.

Our notes look like this:

El Monumento a Los H�roes de la Restauraci�n es un monumento localizado en Santiago de los Treinta Caballeros, Rep�blica Dominicana. El "Monumento a la Paz de Trujillo", como originalmente se llam�, fue erigido originalmente por �rdenes del tirano Trujillo en su honor. Fue dise�ado por el arquitecto Henry Gaz�n Bona. En su interior hay murales conmemorativos del famoso pintor espa�ol Vela Zanetti, y una escalera con 365 pelda�os que llega hasta el tope. Su ornamentaci�n constituida por una serie de cornisas de artes�n en armon�a con toda la obra complet�ndose el conjunto con elegantes columnas estilo j�nico con pisos y z�calos de m�rmol, adem�s de las famosas l�mparas de cristal de Roca.

Mas el interior del Monumento es visitado con poca frecuencia. Es al pie de la torre, en la cima de la colina, donde los santiagueros se congregan para ver la ciudad y pasar buenos ratos en compa��a de amigos y familiares. Tambi�n tanto de d�a como de noche se puede observar un hermoso paisaje de la Ciudad.

Por su silueta caracter�stica, y por su popularidad entre la gente, el Monumento se ha convertido en s�mbolo de la ciudad.

According to the Guinness Book of records, the state of Queensland (where I live) contains the world's largest city by area, Mt Isa, which is 42 904 km� in size. It only has a population of around 20,000 people though

I know that a lot of people travelled from Pennsylvania and settled here back in the 1800's.

Costa Rica dosen't use street addresses. Directions here are given like "From (insert landmark here) "x" amount of meters north to the left, the white house with palm trees outside. 100 meters being a block.
