U.S drop from Top 30 in FIFA World Rankings

quote:
The United States is not ranked among the top 30 in soccer rankings for the first time in more than seven years.
The U.S. team, ranked as high as fifth in May before a poor showing at the World Cup, fell two points to No. 31 in November's FIFA rankings Wednesday. The last time the U.S. was not in the top 30 was June of 1999, when it was also No. 31.

Brazil stayed No. 1, while Nigeria moved up to ninth and Russia jumped 10 places for its highest position in more than three years.

Brazil has 1,588 points, with World Cup champion Italy second with 1,560. Brazil has been ranked No. 1 since July of 2002.

Italy's 1-1 draw with Turkey in a Nov. 15 friendly in Turkey would have been enough to pull even with Brazil in ranking points. But the Brazilians increased their lead at the top by beating Switzerland 2-1 in a friendly the same night.

Argentina moved up to No. 3 with 1,551 points, swapping places with France (1,523).

England, Germany and the Netherlands remain at Nos. 5, 6 and 7, with Nigeria moving up two places from 11th and the Czech Republic falling two places to 10th.

Spain fell two places to 12th.

Russia is at No. 23 its highest position since early 2003.

we've had this discussion before, its a rediculous listing

Posted by King Ecnal on Nov-23-2006 23:28:

unreal... a national team with SUPERSTARS like Eddie Johnson, Brian Ching.... oh wait....

31 you say?

Isn't that still being a tad genorous?

We need Brasilians to start having babies over here then screwing back over to Brazil... then when their kids can't make the Brasilian team.... they can play for Team USA...

yeah I figured it all out... thats all we really need...

Well don't act so surprised. Think here for a sec. Back in May the US team lost to Morocco. Let's face it, if you lose to Morocco you might as well retire your team from national competition. They didn't. Also, the performance at the World Cup was embarrassing. Two loses, one with the great squad of Ghana, and a draw with a team full of male models. And to believe Bush was told the US had a good team. How wrong his futbol advisers were.

Now, how many matches have they played after the WC?

Fifa Rankings, oh la la . But the US aren't good at all, no ranks needed to know that.

Posted by verndogs on Nov-24-2006 16:04:

what's the point of this poll anyway?

Posted by The_G0dfather on Nov-24-2006 16:05:

Course, we can refute that statement by saying how many teams lost to Latvia on their road to Euro 2004?

And why should friendlies be weighed in terms of rankings?

Because most national teams play very few games in a season, and some might not even have a single official game in 2 consecutive seasons (if they're the holders of the forthcoming european or world cup). A ranking can't be representative if given a very small amount of data.

It might be fair criticism to say official games could have more weight against the friendlies in the ranking, though.
