Sasha Reviews...

place was completely bonkers by midnight with Jay Prasad and John Curley tagging on the decks. Unfortunatley I didn't get to hear Kyle zmurlo's opening set but I have no doubt it was great. I peeped Sasha's setup when he got on the "deck" and it's pretty simple:

19" iMac, his customer controller and an external HD.

I didn't really see more than 2 channels of audio going at a time in Ableton on his screen. At that point I was a bit confused as to what he needed all the buttons and sliders with the custom controller if he is only mixing 2 channels of audio. I started to worry thinking that all he is doing is mixing back and forth between 2 tracks in Ableton... no extra loops from other tracks going at the same time to broaden the sound, etc.

well I chatted with Blake who spoke with his tech guy and gave me a cliff notes version of his explanation of the setup. He basically splices his tracks into sections of varying amounts (before the show of course) and loads them into the channel of his choice. One section triggers another and some sections are programmed to loop endlessly until he triggers the next section or sequence. Also, the basslines from each track are sidechained automatically so they do not affect each other when being mixed. He doesn't have to use the bass eq on the mixer and because of this and you have flawless sound throughout!

He regained credibility after this explanation to me but I STILL didn't see more than 2 channels of audio going throughout the night. I would just like to wonder how the vibe could have been escalated by adding other elements to the mix.

This is just scratching the surface I'm sure with his setup and it has so much potential that I would bet he hasn't used 25% of what his controller can do in Ableton. Absolute MADNESS!!!!!

sorry for the geek speak for those who don't care... but I have nothing but mad respect for the man and I am extremely happy I finally got to see him for the FIRST time...

yes, it was my first time ever seeing Sasha live.

It was great to see everyone as usual... Ben, sorry I didn't come up and have a drink with you... I was stupified by the hardware on stage

Its not uncommon to see him just mixing 2 tracks one after the other like the old days.

Although several times in LA he had 3-4 channels going at once.

Whoa how does that work?

Posted by Blake_Jarrell on Nov-26-2006 19:50:

i think you got the sidechain idea backwards sendawg. the bass frequencies of one track (the one being mixed in) kill the bass freqs of the current track being played, gradually more and more as its being mixed in. so like at one point he was playing a track with a constant bassline, the track being mixed in had a really low syncopated tom that would kill the bassline of the previous track more and more rhythmically as he brought it in. fucking dope shit.

It certainly is one of the smoothest rides in dance music.

I knew you'd be all over this review Clovis

I have a dope pic for ya... just been lazy to post it... I will later in this thread.

Just saw him on Friday in SF, he tore the place apart! Any other MWTA's go? I know Bobby went, he was texting me non-sense throughout the night

whoa.. that's hot..

I thought Sasha got off to a rather slow start, I didn't really hear anything that moved me. Later on (have no idea what time it was, all I know is the one time I looked at my clock out of curiosity, it was 4:12 LAWL!!) he started dropping some sick stuff. It was really good.

btw first time for me as well. and, I don't remember the last time I ever saw Vision that packed.. I mean it was like Sardines, almost everywhere you looked. I think it was the most packed I ever seen it, like, ever.

Blake, you said he was using two chanels on the Pioneer, looks like one is for his cue via maven.

I dont think so, if you look his cans are plugged into the mixer, and now that I think about it, everytime I've seen him at Avalon he's been plugged into the Xone 92.

^^same thing, two channels with one on cue. Other two for Lee Burridge.

I can't load that pic

Maybe it does and he just prefers using the mixer setup? I dunno. In LA he was doing tagteam sets so it makes sense...but in Chicago...??

pic: google sasha maven, images, should come up first one

and yeah it didnt seem to make sense especially since in ableton the cue'd track lights up a different color, never saw that when he was playing. im sure his routing is an absolute mess, and is probably the key to his setup, along with those rows of clip trigger buttons.

...and the top secret filter setup. lol

I wanna know what those two small faders under the knobs for each channel are. I think they may be send/rtn volumes...dunno.

I am RJT's seething jealousy.

So i really have no idea what all that music jargon is that you are all speaking of, but i had a fucking' blast! i've got that lovely ringing in my ears.

i didn't know the track, but at around 4am, he dropped somethin' massive; and with the chilled smoke [or whatever it was] that came down and you couldn't see for like 2 minutes if you were on the dancefloor [which i was the whole night....aside for getting drinks]...it was amazing. fantastic. i've got vids and pics that will come soon. i'm sure my sound will suck on the vids, but we'll see.

anyhow, i met one TA....and i don't know who it was. there's a pic - it'll be posted.

the only thing that i think kinda sucks, and this happened when i saw G&D at vision....is that i don't like the DJs being on the ground floor. i really, honestly, liked it better when they were on the 2nd floor...almost hovering over the dancefloor. that stupid white shield got in the way if you were on the 2nd floor.

ps, i wanted to get one of those purefuture inflatable balls SOOOOO bad. haha
