Whats T.O.'s music "style" of choice?

We all know that Toronto has a pretty good "underground" elctronic/rave scene. There are "Scenes" and places to go for almost every genre of "rave" music.

So my question is "What kind of town are we"??

I think the predominant opinion is that we are either a place for House or Jungle. (Cause we all know that trance isn't #1 here)

After being at the A.V. Helden/Bad boy Bill party last night (which was wickedness by the way) I saw how mad people get for big name housers... But they had ruckus in the lounge and that place was totally rammed.

Actually, I think we're more of a Drum & Bass/Jungle town...I know those are the 2 styles that are most popular in my school...I don't know about the rest of the city though

Right now, I would have to say Progressive because it draws people from both the Trance and House scenes... and I think that will be proven when S&D show up.

But what makes Toronto unique is that we have strong scenes in all types of electronic music - House, Trance, Prog, D&B, Breaks, etc. Any given weekend you can find a party going on with whatever type of electronic music you like.

Progressive ALL THE WAY !!!

Seriously though, Toronto is mainly a Drum N Bass/Jungle town, they have a few or more jungle nights all over town (almost every night) and when they have an event it packs up 10X as much as a progressive or Trance party does, not only that, it's not just Toronto is pretty much the whole GTA plus further west too, so DnB/Jungle would be first, then progressive, then Trance.

Smile

^^^^^^^^

agreed.

I would say that Jungle / DnB is the most popular. There's so many flyers around promoting Jungle parties (big or small)...sometimes I wonder where are all these people from?

Do we have an identity like Chicago for house and Amsterdam for Trance? I don't think so. I don't think Toronto's well known for anything let alone electronic music.

I admit I don't follow the D&B scene too closely, but 10X?? what is the biggest D&B party during the year? I thought Bittersweet and Soundclash were two of the bigger D&B parties, and they were held at the docks which is just an average sized venue... the big prog parties would draw a comprable sized crowd to that...

Lightbulb THE times r always changing

10 years ago i would figure that techno was the big sound in TO. up until the 6 yrs ago I would say "happy hardcore" with all the big international venues. Trance has never been big. Everytime i go to Toronto I hear "oh this place plays trace". But 20 out 1 its really trance. Mostly Euro beats and techno. Nothing wrong with techno but promoter better do a better job for me. 5 yrs ago I would say the "progressive house" was the big work. I personally don't like that work. All of u Teisto fans should realize the meaning. If u have every seen any of his read/seen him talk on the subject. Now I don't now. I would assume Electronic is the gerenal context applied. but I've been out of the T.O. sceen for a # of yrs.

If your talking about the all-age scene ... DnB/Jungle and Breaks for sure. I didn't realize this until lately ... the DnB/Jungle scene has died. 2yrs ago, that scene was insanely massive with alot of parties happening. But, recently barely any DnB/Jungle events are around. It's b/c of the lack of new tracks are produced. If you listen closely to a 99 and 2002 set ... you'll hear pretty the same tracks spun.

Now for the 19+ side
Progressive and Breaks are the picks and Trance is coming back slowly. House will always attract alot of ppl.

Idea

In my opinion.. i think Toronto.. is realy up with rock.. like you look at Much muzik.. and it's all like soft rock rock and hard rock..
like you get maybe 3 hours out of the day that is like.. rap and hip hop.. and then you get like 3 hours out of the week being a bit of dance.. and a little bit of electrica.. so

ya

and the MAJor more popular Radio stations are like Chum fm 104.5 and mixx fm 99.9 for adults
but for teens and kids.. or whatever it's like kiss 92.5

Breaks is definitely up there now, but i can't agree with you about the DnB scene... if it's mostly all ages then why is it that the DnB/jungle have the most 19+ clubs/lounges happening everywhere more then every other genre in the electronic scene... there's almost a place to go to listen to it pretty much every night of the week.

Yeah but when they have it at the docks, it packs up more then Trance/prog parties... plus Trance and Progressive have more larger venues available...ie: The Guv Complex!
Don't get confused, i'm not saying that this is my main choice of music or is the better music cause it definitely is not. I'm just saying this from experience.
This thread is about what kind of a town is Toronto for electronic music... Now if we were to say, "What kind of Town is Toronto?.. not including breaks or DnB", then the answer would obviously progressive.

Ummm...I would say pretty much the Drum and bass scene is a mere fraction of what it used to be. It is pretty pathetic now, they need to make it all ages so they can make money.(which you know the place is hurting if they have to do that). Drum and bass is pretty much on the outs (except to the young kids in high schools) they love it as an alternative to hip hop.

Anyway, Toronto is a total house city. All the big clubs it's house, Prog house minimal, whatever. Most of the clubs (that make any money) play house (Film Lounge, Element, Guv and so on) . Still though...the raves are still dominated by trance and always was..thanks to Destiny. So next time your at a Destiny party make sure to thank them for how great they made Toronto's scene. Still though....Toronto is a house city...just like New York, it's sad but true. Oh well..could be worst
