Mixer to PC with 5.1

I use Virtual Dj 4.0 on the computer often and have recently bought a new mixer to use with my cdjs. however i wanted to set the mixer up with the pc just to mess about with it. I use a SB Live! soundcard which connects to a 5.1 system. The soundcard is connected to the 5.1 through three 3.5mm jack cables and then the output from the subwoofer with integrated amp connects to the 5 speakers through phonos outputs.

Virtual dj gives the option of using an external mixer and allows you to chose the relavent sound card and also which deck plays from the front output and which from the back. however i cannot get the setup to play through the 5.1 and when i connect the mixer to another set of speakers the sound quality is very poor (overloaded with bass and treble with barely any mid sound levels). can anyone help please?

While I haven't worked with 5.1 channel outputs, I would think you could only do stereo outputs using the mixer. I'm not sure whether or not VirtualDJ can mix 5.1, but I have my doubts.

Generally, with any virtual DJ software and a soundcard with multiple outputs, you route a deck through each physical output. You mentioned at least three; now you just need to figure out how to set that up in the software options.

I'm not sure if each output (physical) is capable of doing stereo; if this is not the case, you would only be hearing one channel (mono [left by default?]), rather than stereo.

As to getting the sound to play through 5.1, if the 5.1 speaker setup requires three outputs on the soundcard (for different channels), then it is unrealistic to expect to play in 5.1, since you're using outputs from the soundcard.

The only way you could have it (potentially) play through the 5.1 speakers is if you routed the output from the mixer back into the computer and had it play through an available output. Again, see above regarding requiring multiple outputs.

As to poor sound quality, make sure the outputs aren't filtering the signal. Speakers with subwoofers generally filter out high and low frequencies to send to the respective sub/speaker, but that may or may not be the case.

Hopefully this somewhat helps... not really thinking very clearly at the moment (it's late).

hey i have the same problem

i just brought my first mixer (Staton M.303) and i can't hook it up to my computer
i can't get it to work, do i need some kind of usb interface? (i don't have a tt or vdj)
i plan on mixing it on virtual dj

First I plugged in my RCA-to-1/8" Y adapter to Line in 2 (on sound card)
then to L/R of my Line 2 on mixer

setting it up 4.1 in virtual dj

i finally got it, i took the GREEN wire to stereophone on my I/O drive
the other RED & WHITE to Phono1

i was able to hear anything i adusted on the mixer during VirtualDJ playback
however i can't record what i mixed, it only play back normally without my mix
i need another cable of the same?? and hook it up to microphone (Line 2)?

I have the same exact problem with it playing back normally without my mix, but i was told to download Asio4All and i did. But i still cannot figure out how to properly wire everything over again.

And Tranceholic i have almos the same sound card as you even the same I/O drive.
