Need help Engineering technology peeps

i have a paper to write... and i need to find stuff on...well here it is....

i need to find stuff on engineering disasters that involves an aspect of material failures....

so stuff that maybe caused an airplain crash..or caused a building to collaspe..... anybody have any ideas or remember any major disasters due to mechanical failures?

The Tacoma Narrows Bridge disaster is the most awesome complete failure ever. The video is so cool.

Footage.

:| hook it up!

yeah just any major disastors due to mechanical failures...like a plain splitting in half or....a structural colapse

if you wanna score big on this papper then do some research and write about the failure of the levees in New Orleans.

but i must tell you ... in your papper you will have to convince the readers that the levees gave out not because of the major hurricane but because of the design, construction, and / or maintenance of the levees.

that is where your reseach comes in and if your able to do so then this papper of yours will kick ass

hmmm...yeah iwas reading about the levees...i like the tacoma one though, but thanks for giving me the ideas still!

Does the brain count as "material failure"? Cuz human error is by far the largest cause of disasters.

Tacoma Narrows was already suggested, and it's a good one for sure.

That SwissAir flight that exploded (allegedly) due to worn wiring in the fuel tanks...would that count?

Titanic might fit just because it was billed as being an engineering masterpiece.

There was also an F117 stealth fighter who's wing snapped off and crashed into a suburban backyard during an airshow.

(sorry about the lack of links, but hope this helps)

Paul

I remember back in the 80's the engines of DC-10 aircraft were falling off due to metal fatigue on the main bolts holding the engine to the wing mount.
After they grounded the planes and checked them all they found a number of them with cracked bolts just waiting to let go.

Hope this helps.

Well Tacoma was due to resonance. ie frequency matching.

and it went down since the brdige wasnt designed to withstand torsional forces.

I dont think this is a good topic since it wasnt necessarily due to material failing but due to the way it was built.

nah thats a good one because we're talking about sheer force..torsional...etc

My father (and both my grandfathers) is an Ironworker so this kind of stuff I find fascinating.

Here's one for you...

Yeah so uh, the materials failed...

what about the titanic?
wasnt a majority of the leakage caused by not only the striking of the iceberg but because the metals used on the titanic were not strong and amoungst cold waters became even more brital?
