Ableton Live or Vinyl?

Does any one here use Ableton live?So what does everyone preffer Ableton or Vinyl?What are the pros and cons of both?Any big sound differences between vinyl or digital?

There is obviously a difference in sound, but it's whatever you prefer I guess. Do you spin? If so, you should look into using real tables or cdj's, for a number of reasons. Anyone can sit behind a laptop and mix tracks (like Packer does:clown, but you will never learn how to really do DJ by doing so. Plus, if you ever want to start playing clubs or any type of gig, most people won't even consider you unless you are a big name headliner that can get away with it. Sasha and BT are two good examples. Sasha does it and is good with Ableton. In my opinion he can do whatever the hell he wants because he has been doing it so well for so long, even before the concept of the laptop applications. BT, on the other hand, relies on his laptop applications because he would die (like I want Ryan to do) if he had to use anything else. Just my opinion. I use CDJ800's and like using them very much. I know how to use vinyl, but the cost of vinyl prompted me to move to CD's with DL's only costing around two bucks.

Steve's right. Djing is completely different. If you wanna start spinnin some records make sure to grab your balls and loose your ears (and your head). jk

Ableton is a sequencing program for live editing and performing. It will allow you to mix tracks togheter. That's only 10% of what the program is. If you feel creative the software will allow you to make your own tracks and loops. (geeky)

Vinyl is a dead technology, the quality is ace but to learn to handle vinyls is a life-long lesson.

i always say... use vinyl to establish your djing foundation. because if u look @ the expensive cd players they all try to emulate vinyl in some sort of way. sooo once u can use a turntable you will be able to handle any cd player n all that. thats just how i started and its my opinion... but vinyl can get pricey... 12 bux for 2 songs... opposed 2 buying a song for 2 bux online... idk but i prefer vinyl over n e thing n e day. thats why i only buy rare classics and instant classics on vinyl. so if u see me djing and its on vinyl youll know the track is gonna be slammin.

im with the general opinion. start out on vinyl. know how to spin vinyl. then, you can work your way through the cd decks and stuff.

Between Wave and 320kbs mp3 files to vinyl there differences are very minimal and (in my opinion) are unpercievable by 95% of any given venue.

However, if your digital consists of mp3s lower than 256K...yes there will be a difference. The lower you go you'll lose more warmth/clarity and start hearing swirly like artifacts. My opinion...stay away from MP3s and use Wave audio...even at that, it all depends on how the tracks are mastered. Hope this helps.

Also...as others have said, I would STRONGLY urge you and every aspiring DJ to learn how to spin usuing vinyl or CDJs. Learning on anything that mathes the tempo and key for you will be counter productive, a good challenge in mastering an art builds character and appreciation. My very humble opinion.

I use Ableton and love it. Its really intuitive and easy to learn.

For playing out I prefer Serato or FS2. You can play all your mp3s and still feel like you're playing vinyl.

I'd play out on Ableton only if it were accepted. Soon.

Seriously...

It didn't take long for CDs to be accepted, so hopefully the same holds true for Ableton.

I hope so because any monkey can beatmatch tracks that isn't what being a DJ is about. And the whole vinyl thing I've never been one to get sentimental over PVC. I just don't see the point.

i ran across this thread on accident


when i lived in the south (new orleans) i noticed that djing with ableton wasnt accepted either, but living here now in chicago its widely accepted. im not quite sure why.

there is no one way of djing that is "better" than the other, there is only what is best for you. i personally dont care for the crackle and hum of vinyl and would rather hear cds or tracks off a computer. i use ableton at about half of my gigs and spin cds the other half for a variety of reasons (usually ableton is just too much of a pain in the ass to set up).

learn on vinyl or cds though, beatmatching and phrasing is best learned without a computer. its also important to learn your way around a hardware mixer and learn eqing and such (far overlooked imo). then apply those concepts to ableton when you finally get bored with manual beatmatching, and take it a step further by using all the limitless features in ableton to do something unique and usefull.

I prefer PCDJ demo copy. Man I can rip it up with that. Die Dave.
