Invisible Grin Music sounds better when it's recommended

I think the reason why is because instead of hearing this new song like it was "just another trance track," you instead listen to it knowing someone actually thinks it's worth your time. It's so good that they would actually recommend it to you.

For example, the song For An Angel by van Dyk; When I first heard this, I was like, "ok." But when I started reading about how you guys like it, I listened again and I was blown away!

But then again, there are always those tracks that just sound good to everyone. Like Satellite by Oceanlab. I loved this song the first time I heard it and I was glad to later discover that it's well-liked by you guys here on tranceaddict.

Well trance is bad.

But...

Usually when someone reccomends something to me, I take it with a grain of salt, most of the EDM lovers I know love EVERYTHING, and dont understand that I have more specific tastes ahahaha.

make your own opinions on tracks.

Exactly. What you're describing here No_gravity is called bandwagoning.

I do sometimes. But most of the time I end up missing the supposed good tracks because I don't pay attention.

So like right now I'm listening to this album called IN-TRance vol. 2. The whole album is "meh" to me. But this song "Trance Anthem 6 (radio edit)" by "Y.O.J." is pretty good.

I would agree with that. When people say that they like a song, they usually say why and you start to sub-consciously make a list of things to look out for. So when you listen to the song again, you listen for those specific parts. Sometimes you like them, and sometimes you don't. What determines if you like the whole song is like a scale in your head, and the negatives weigh out against the positives. This decision making process goes on in your head every time you listen to the song. Thats why sometimes after listening to a single song multiple times in a row, you start to like it less and less. This is because the negatives just received a new member: repetition. And if the negative and the positives were about even in the first place, the song gets old, and you don't like it anymore. (This is why there are so many rap "hits" and they come and go faster then you can think)

Now, psychology aside, if you are one of those people who change their opinion just to fit others, then thats a whole different story.

(Sorry to all of you who like rap. It's not my fault you are all dumb.)

Eh, I describe it as being lazy and letting the true fans lead me to the way of the good shit.

That happened with me too. I had heard that track before and when I read about it later on, how famous it is and stuff, I was like, Really ? What's so special about it ? I still find it plain ordinary. But there are other tracks which you like right away and many times they turn out to be hits !!

Cool, cool, but I felt the same way you did about 'For An Angel' when I first heard it, except that I still think the track is nothing special regardless of external influence. But I see your point though. Some people don't notice a track's special quirks until somebody points it out for them. For me I usually get the feel of the whole track after a couple 'listens'. I rarely if ever need the help of somebody else to guide me on the hidden dynamics of a track.

I think its more like this: If someone recommends a track that suits you tastes you will like it. but if it doesnt suit your tastes you wont like it.

Posted by Allied Nations on Nov-30-2006 06:21:

I always reccomend kickass shit, so I can see why you'd think that.

Music sounds better when you have to dig through heaps of crappy tracks to find the gems.

Does it?

People like the tracks they're likely to like the most. Too bad. It's good to step out of that once in a while.

Reason 1: After the recommendation you pay more attention to that song while listening to it, so yeah, you might discover something you havent before.

Reason 2: When someone says 'omg ch00n i die', you listen to that tune with some kind of positive bias and it may affect your opinion on the track. But it shouldnt.

i find myself often getting dissapointed when checking out a "omfg choon" simply cause its not what im looking for.

ofcourse, any tune that gets the recommended sticked from me are awesome tunes indeed.. like: (example)

Wizzy Noise - R.I.P Saki

Symmetry C - Brainchild (Lange Remix)

Paris Hilton - Turn It Up (Paul Oakenfold Remix)

but then again, i doubt most u will like these.

Fixed. And yes, that tune is easily in my all-time top 100. Quite high up there too.

That's quite a bold assumption you made there.

i agree that you should judge music for yourself, but I have to admit that I've experienced what you're talking about. I'll have a listen to something, but maybe I just didn't give it a good enough look, then I hear someone on here talk about how they like it, and I'll give it another listen. Sometimes I end up liking it more.
