Another rock thread!

I always found it hard to find quality rock bands, but those i like i really, REALLY like. Basically i want to expand my horizons a little, and i might as well turn to you people for some guidance.

My favorite bands, as of now:

Bloc Party
The Verve
Foo Fighters
Smashing Pumpkins
Radiohead
Oasis
Coldplay
A Perfect Circle
Refused
U2

(Snow Patrol is also good, but i so wish they would have another singer that didnt sound like someone taken from a american high school movie or something..)

Anyone care to help me out here?

Tool

Monster Magnet - God says no (album)
RJD2 - Since we last spoke (album)
Opeth - Damnation (album)
POD - Satellite (album - thx SMC :P)
Shinedown

and go to last.fm, get the player and an account. Listen to the similar artists radio for each one of your artists listed there, you'll find some great stuff.

Coheed and Cambria

rage against the machine!

Posted by |Thrax| on Dec-02-2006 01:30:

my favorite band is Incubus but just to name a few here are what some of my friends are listening to. Some of it I like, some of it I think is emo crap but still; every band has their merits in one way or another.

Listening to nothing but rock music makes people numb to the world.

IMO Snow Patrol's new album totally sucks. Final Straw was a masterpeice though.

Some bands I really like/love:
Muse (i srsly think they are phenominal, they were originally sought as the nezxt radiohead but they are more psychodelic rock, AWESOME AWESOME, cant go wrong with any other their albums. all fantastic stuff)
Stereophonics
Phoenix
Keane
Athlete (sounds like coldplay, pheniminal band, love love em!)
The Rapture (more like dance punkish stuff)
The Knife (electro pop dance)
editors (got a few remixes on the progressive house side of things, great new band)
zero 7
frou frou/imogen heap (more pop then rock)

some other stuff some of my friends like and ive heard a few times, you might appreciate:

Brand New
The Killers (everyone has heard of them by now) i think the last album was pretty weak. Hot Fuss sold millions of copies though.
TV On the radio
hard fi

if you like radiohead definetely check out thom yorkes solo album the eraser.

all the girls are in love with this band that just all of a sudden blew up out of nowhere called The Fray. It's piano rock kinda stuff. catchy, but im so sick of hearing it now bc it gets blasted on every radio station on the planet. def one of those cross overbands that you will find parents and kids listening to.

there is a pretty cool band out of Texas that just released an album Called "The Format" their first single is called "the compromise" its catchy indie type stuff.

if you are into some more mellow rock check out older releases and new stuff from:

gomez
band of horses
carissa's weird
cat power

dude, if you got down this far and didnt read everything i wrote, read agian. if you got this far and liked it then you srsly have some amazing recommendations.

sorry for the long thread. it was worth it. trust me

The only one in this thread who has actually posted some quality rock bands, other then the mainstream cheesy usual stuff!I like your eclecticism, keep-it up Allied!

In addition to these very beautifull post/prog-rock bands mentioned by Allied Nations i will add:

modern post-rock/prog-rock:

Godspeed You Black Emperor! (huge orchestral post-rock)

Mogwai (a classic modern band!)

Sigur Ros (experimental rock band from iceland...huge reverbating quitars and electric cellos, cold synths and alto vocals singing in a non-sense exotic language...extremely emotional, beautifull and strange at the same time)

M83 (massive ethereal synth-driven post-rock...Ulrich Schnauss meets Slowdive meets 80s synth-pop meets Mogwai...extremely good music from France)

Labradford (these guys from Texas are not house-hold names but they were extremely influential...haunting ambient with whispering vocals played by a conventional 3-man rock band!)

A Silver Mount Zion (A side-project of Godspeed...huge,orchestral instrumental, emotional, epic, experimental these are the words to describe them)

Set Fire To Flames (dark, dynamic and epic. Great instrumental music)

Lali Puna (a cross between modern IDM glitchy electronics, 80s synth-pop and modern instrumental post-rock. Yes its a perfect result)

90s shoegaze/dream-pop/dream-rock:

Shoegazer is a style of rock characterised by ethereal extremely reverbarating and delayed quitars, producing in this way a "wall-of-sound" effect. The resulting sound is very dreamy, hazy and dynamic, Ulrich schnauss is a modern artist who is said to play "electro-gazer" that is, an electronic form of the original 90s shoegazer (and so are M83 sometimes).Ulrich Schnauss is a fan of Slowdive as we can clearly see from his remix of "Crazy for You". Here are the key shoegaze-dream bands

My Bloody Valentine
Cocteau Twins
Slowdive
Lush
Ride
Bethany Curve
Red House Painters
The Autumns

How about some 80s new-wave-synth-pop-dark-wave-post-punk? It became cool again but i was always a fan! Of-course read this section only if you can "afford" the 80s in general...otherwise stick to the previous two sections!

The Cure
The Smiths
Joy Division/New-Order
Bauhaus
Dead Can Dance (first albums)
Killing Joke
Simple Minds (did you know that these irish guys were the major influence of U2?)
Echo & the Bunnymen
A Flock of Seagulls (love them..beautifull synth-pop with perfect emotional quitar lines..."space-age love song"...)
The Chameleons u.k. (my favorite band ever...strange vocals but the best music you gonna hear out there...huge lead-guitars and massive synth-lines...)
The Fixx
The Fall
OMD
Teardrop Explodes
The Psychedelic Furs
Wire
Sisters of Mercy
Death in June
Ultravox
Clan of Xymox
i forget many of them now...

i would go to mention experimental 70s kraut-rock bands (you know...the scene that had bands like Kraftwerk and Neu! and started electronic music...) bu then again would be to much!I hoped i opened your horizons beyond Oasis,Coldplay and U2)

true. saw them a couple of weeks ago now & they totally blew the place up. Their strength is in matt's voice & his vocal range, allowing them to do all sorts of stuff style wise, from the weird take a bow, time is running out etc to the queen-style knights of cydonia, and the classics of bliss, plug in baby, sunburn, microcuts, TSP, space dementia etc, to the slow stuff like blackout, endlessly, soldiers poem, hyper chondriac music. add to that their live reputation & you can see why they're good

I wouldn't really recommend keane if i'm honest, it's nice, but it's a bit "poppy" compared to some of what were mentioned.

on topic. check out

Billy Corgan's solo album
OLD green day
classic stuff like Motorhead

I also think a thing common is the strong male vocalist, for this i'd also recommend

we are scientists
old feeder stuff
kasbian
Embrace
The Zutons

and possibly

my chemical romance
lost prophets

What's that got to do with it though? The guys asked us for our opinions, and not just to list the ones that you yourself consider the coolest. If you look at the ones n0bben has listed, i'm pretty sure that however legitimate your suggestions, that they may not even be as close to what he's looking for as some of the 'mainstream/cheesy/usual that the rest of us have said.

never have done, it's just annoying that whenever a topic comes up that isn't about armin or pvd or something that we can't just have fun with it

oh no these arent mainstream at all

Posted by PETRAN on Dec-02-2006 04:14:

They are not AS mainstream as coldplay and oasis for god's sake!Maybe they used to be in the 80s but not anymore

So, what's your problem? I've just made a statement towards Allied Nations not YOU, and i surely didn't have in mind to "stop YOU or anyother from having fun in the thread". If my big list was irrelevant then fair enough, it was me who has put the effort not YOU. the only reason i've compiled this catalogue is to state that there is more to rock then oasis and coldplay, a kind of rock which i personally,(and many others), find more fulfilling and deep. It may be that the threadstarter someday searches through some of these bands and find them very interesting. If you somehow find my sayings somehow disturbing then it was YOU not me.That's all there is to it, cheers.

what does mainstream have to do with it anyways? theres plenty of good bands that have been in the mainstream.

Posted by PETRAN on Dec-02-2006 04:46:

My point was that these bands were not AS mainstream as other ones mentioned. What's your point?

Posted by RapidFire on Dec-02-2006 04:53:

my point is that using "mainstream" as a negative thing when it comes to rock is pretty laughable considering the most great rock bands have been mainstream at one time or another

The point is it's fucking irrelevant how mainstream they bloody well are, because that has dick all to do with how good they actually are. And you dismissed RATM, so your opinion is worthless anyway.

dismissing TMV and CoCa is pretty ignorant as well but whatever...they shit over most of the bands he listed.

Posted by SMC on Dec-02-2006 05:18:

Some of my favourite rock bands in no particular order:

Pink Floyd
The Who
P.O.D.
Keane

U2
Coldplay
Bloc Party
The Verve (Urban Hymns is probably one of the best cds i own)

Some very diverse groups within rock, kinda reflects how diverse music i listen to in general. You mentioned the last four too, so i guess our taste coincides to some extent.

I'll give you two album recommendations:

Pink Floyd - PULSE (double cd of crystal clear sounding live recordings from the Division Bell tour, for me personally this is a "best of")

P.O.D. - Testify (awesome album they released this year, emotional rock tunes, banging rap-metal, a beautiful reggae-rock prayer and more, all on one album)

Maybe you're already familiar with them, then i've wasted my time.

Posted by |Thrax| on Dec-02-2006 05:32:
