how do you get the pro sound?

whats the secret?

Posted by tecnolover on Dec-02-2006 03:28:

What exactly do you mean by "pro sound"?

Posted by MrJiveBoJingles on Dec-02-2006 03:36:

Buy thousands of dollars worth of hardware synths and effects.

Nah. What parts of your sound are you having trouble with?

Posted by Mr.Mystery on Dec-02-2006 03:46:

The big magic red button.

Posted by kitphillips on Dec-02-2006 07:35:

1/ you walk around the console three times in an anti clockwise direction (five times if console is under $50 000)
2/ say 7 hail marys
3/ wave your rosary around your head in a clockwise direction until the sound is almost right.
4/ put a multiband compressor on and pump the ratio to 1:20 and the threshhold way down low
5/ Go and spin that tune!

Posted by Craig Bradley on Dec-02-2006 08:11:

not really helpful is it...

anyway mate it's all down to how you mix the tune make sure each element has it's own frequency space in the field and doesn't clash with any other elements ie (eq) . make sure you find or make sounds which fit nice together, also down to volume levels aswell make sure you get your volume levels right if this is wrong it can sound shite anyway. Compression is not always important i think tunes are too compressed these days but thats my personal opionion i think levels is the main issue.

lol...it doesn't have to do anything with time...
it's mostly about reading, knowing, trying, learning and all....everyone gets it in is own time...one can make great sounds in 2-3 years when the other makes the same sounds after 10 years...all depends...

it's not something you can change in a day...it's a process...work on it...read articles...try different things...not everything needs to be to complex...

Yes. The "pro-sound" is all about crisp mixing.

Posted by DJDIRTY on Dec-02-2006 16:23:

- get some good monitors, and converters, cables, room acoustics to accually hear what you're mixing.
- begin with quality samples
- get some good plugins if you're mixing ITB
- for hardware synths get a high quality stereo preamp (you can also run your vsti synths thrue that to give it the extra edge, fullnes, bottom end that's ussually missing)
- read a lot about mixing
- when you're not making tunes just throw some stuff you made in the sequencer and mix (try to improve it, or try new techniques).. try to make it best as possible.
- make friends with someone who accually makes great mixes and watch him and lear from him.. <-- this is one of my favorites.
- leave mastering to someone who knows what they are doing,(if you have no clue) and have the right equipment.

Posted by Mr.Mystery on Dec-02-2006 16:47:

It all comes with experience, really. You don't even notice it yourself, but when you check back on your older tunes you'll hear the difference.

Or at least you should. There's no short cuts here.

Posted by newtrancer on Dec-03-2006 01:04:

that pro sound

you get it with practice

but as long as you have a good mix a good mixdown with no clipping, levels are good and everything is in key of course then your good

Take care of your ears, a vital tool.

Posted by shawn larsen on Dec-03-2006 01:50:

dude you have to know what you are doing to get that "pro sound". it doesnt matter wether you use hardware or software but what does matter is that you know your equipment backwards. also concentrate on music theory [very important]. there are NO shortcuts. just keep at it like the rest of us.

The pro sound? You hire sound engineers.

Posted by kitphillips on Dec-03-2006 02:02:

Haha , This is a funny thread, Krispy you've been round here a while, you know what happens when people ask this question. You know as well as we all do that there's no such thing as a "pro sound"! Why don't you post whatever track you're getting frustrated with and we can try adn give you some more specific advice.

Posted by phyrrus on Dec-03-2006 02:36:

Im having trouble with the "sound" part. It is not the Logic / song part. I compare my stuff to tracks by Armin Van Buuren or whoever and they have that extra umphh. Its like they only use a few tracks but each track sticks out right in your face and is very thick and phat /warm.
Its hard to explain this is the best way I can put it.

I just got back from vacation, so sorry i didnt get to reply earlier
